SPECIALIZED BANKS

Meaning of Specialized Banks

Specialized banks are financial institutions established to provide specific financial services to particular sectors or individuals, unlike commercial banks which offer a wide range of services to the general public. They focus on niche markets and specialized needs.

Types and Functions of Specialized Banks

1. Development Banks

Development banks are financial institutions established by governments or international organizations to provide medium and long-term finance for economic development projects, often in sectors like agriculture, industry, and infrastructure. They aim to promote economic growth and reduce poverty.

The following are functions of Development Banks:

  • Providing long-term loans for industrial and agricultural projects.
  • Offering technical and managerial advice to entrepreneurs.
  • Promoting the establishment of new industries.
  • Facilitating foreign investment in national development.

2. Merchant Banks

Merchant banks are financial institutions that primarily deal with corporate finance, international finance, and underwriting services rather than traditional retail banking for individuals. They serve large corporations and wealthy individuals.

The following are functions of Merchant Banks:

  • Providing corporate finance services (e.g., mergers and acquisitions advice).
  • Underwriting new issues of shares and debentures.
  • Managing investment portfolios for clients.
  • Offering international trade finance.
  • Providing project finance.

3. Mortgage Banks

Mortgage banks are financial institutions that specialize in providing loans for the purchase, construction, or renovation of real estate (houses, land, and other properties). These loans are typically secured by the property itself.

The following are functions of Mortgage Banks:

  • Granting long-term loans for housing development.
  • Providing funds for the purchase of land and property.
  • Offering advice on real estate investments.
  • Facilitating access to affordable housing through various schemes.

4. Building Societies

Building societies are financial institutions, similar to mortgage banks, that primarily provide mortgage loans to their members using funds deposited by other members. They are often mutually owned by their depositors and borrowers.

The following are functions of Building Societies:

  • Accepting deposits from members.
  • Providing mortgage loans for house purchase or construction.
  • Offering savings accounts with competitive interest rates.
  • Promoting home ownership among members.

5. Universal Banks

Universal banks are financial institutions that combine commercial banking (deposit-taking and lending), investment banking (underwriting, advisory), and other financial services (like insurance and asset management) under one roof. They offer a comprehensive range of services.

The following are functions of Universal Banks:

  • Providing traditional commercial banking services (current and savings accounts, loans).
  • Offering investment banking services (corporate finance, underwriting).
  • Engaging in asset management and wealth management.
  • Providing insurance products.
  • Facilitating international trade and foreign exchange.
