Lesson Content/Board Summary

INSURANCE

Meaning of Insurance

Insurance is a contract in which an individual or entity (the insured) receives financial protection or reimbursement against losses from an insurance company (the insurer). The insured pays a regular amount called a premium, and in return, the insurer promises to pay a specified sum of money if a particular event or loss occurs.

History of Insurance in Nigeria

Insurance in Nigeria began with foreign companies in the early 20th century, primarily focusing on marine and property insurance due to colonial trade. The first indigenous insurance company, African Alliance Insurance Company, was established in 1960. The industry has since grown, with various regulatory bodies ensuring its development and adherence to international standards.

Basic Principles of Insurance

The following are the fundamental principles guiding insurance contracts:

  • Utmost Good Faith (Uberrimae Fidei) – Both the insured and the insurer must disclose all material facts relevant to the contract honestly and fully. Any concealment or misrepresentation can void the contract.
  • Insurable Interest – The insured must have a financial stake in the subject matter of the insurance. This means they would suffer a financial loss if the insured event occurs. For example, one can insure their own house, but not a stranger’s house.
  • Subrogation – After the insurer has paid for a loss, they acquire the right to pursue any third party who was responsible for the loss. This prevents the insured from recovering more than their actual loss.

Types of Insurance

Insurance can be broadly classified into life insurance and general insurance. This lesson focuses on life assurance.

Life Assurance

Life assurance is a contract between an insurance policy holder and an insurer, where the insurer promises to pay a designated beneficiary a sum of money upon the death of the insured person or after a set period. It provides financial security for dependants.

The following are types of life assurance:

  • Whole Life Insurance – This policy provides coverage for the entire life of the insured. The premium is paid throughout the insured’s life, and the sum assured is paid to the beneficiaries upon the death of the insured, whenever that occurs. It often includes a savings component.
  • Endowment Insurance – This policy combines both savings and protection. It pays a lump sum to the insured either after a specified period (e.g., 10, 15, 20 years) or upon the insured’s earlier death. If the insured survives the term, they receive the maturity benefit; if they die within the term, the beneficiaries receive the sum assured.
