The head teacher of Ezeleke Community Primary School I, Mrs. Chinemerem Ekemezie, has called on the government to urgently address the poor state of infrastructure affecting the school.
Speaking during the school’s third annual inter-house sports competition held in Umuahia South Local Government Area, Ekemezie highlighted several challenges hindering effective teaching and learning.
She listed issues such as damaged classrooms, insufficient furniture, poor water supply, lack of proper sanitation facilities, and weak security systems. According to her, these problems have created an unconducive learning environment for both pupils and staff.
The head teacher explained that repeated acts of vandalism have worsened the situation, leaving school facilities in a dilapidated state. With the rainy season approaching, she appealed to the Abia State government to intervene urgently and restore the school’s infrastructure.
Despite these challenges, Ekemezie praised the determination of the pupils, noting that the inter-house sports competition symbolized hope and resilience rather than just a contest among students.
In his remarks, the Education Secretary of the Umuahia South Local Government Education Authority, Mr. Patrick Ubiaru, acknowledged the poor condition of the school facilities. He attributed much of the damage to vandalism and scavenger activities.
He assured the community that the administration of Governor Alex Otti is committed to improving educational infrastructure across the state. According to him, the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board will take steps to rehabilitate the affected facilities, describing the situation as urgent but manageable.
Ubiaru also emphasized the importance of sports in education, stating that the reintroduction of compulsory inter-house sports competitions in schools is aimed at promoting discipline, teamwork, and talent discovery among pupils. He added that such initiatives could help nurture future athletes who may represent Nigeria on the global stage.
The chairman of the occasion, Chief Kingsley Atulomah, commended the revival of inter-house sports, describing it as a positive step toward building unity and discipline among students. He pledged continued support for the school.
Similarly, the School-Based Management Committee chairman, Mr. Ndubuisi Nwosu, praised ongoing improvements in the state’s education sector, particularly the renewed attention to extracurricular activities.
The event not only showcased students’ talents but also drew attention to the urgent need for improved learning conditions in public schools across the state.
