    • It is leveled with a straight edge and floated to a relatively smooth finish.
    • The mix ratio is typically finer than the scratch coat, e.g., 1:3 (cement:sand).
  3. Finish Coat (Third Coat):
    • This is the final, thin layer applied to achieve a very smooth and fine surface suitable for painting or decoration.
    • It uses a finer mix, often with a higher cement or lime content, e.g., 1:2 or 1:1 (cement:sand).
    • It is carefully trowelled to a high standard of finish.

Procedures Used in Plastering

The general procedures for plastering a wall include:

  1. Surface Preparation:
    • Clean the wall surface thoroughly, removing dust, loose particles, and grease.
    • Dampen the surface to prevent it from absorbing water from the fresh plaster too quickly.
    • Ensure the surface is properly keyed (roughened) for better adhesion of the plaster.
  2. Mixing the Plaster:

    • Mix the dry ingredients thoroughly on a clean, hard surface.

  3. Applying the Scratch Coat:
    • Using a trowel and hawk, apply the first coat evenly to the prepared surface.
    • Ensure the thickness is uniform, typically around 10-12mm.
    • Scratch the surface horizontally or diagonally with a scratching tool to create a key for the next coat.
    • Allow the scratch coat to cure for at least 24-48 hours.
  4. Applying the Brown Coat:
    • Dampen the scratch coat lightly.
    • Apply the second coat, building up the thickness to achieve the desired level.
    • Use a straight edge to level the surface, ensuring it is plumb and true.
    • Float the surface with a wooden float to compact the plaster and remove minor imperfections.
    • Allow this coat to cure for several days.
  5. Applying the Finish Coat:
    • Lightly dampen the brown coat.
    • Apply the final, thin coat (typically 3-5mm) using a steel trowel.
    • Work the plaster to a very smooth, even, and polished finish, removing all trowel marks.
