Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Before this lesson, ensure all necessary materials for demonstrating floor finishing mixes (cement, sand, water, small aggregates) and tools are available. The central concept is to help students understand various floor finishing materials, how to prepare a floor for these finishes, and the appropriate mixes or installation methods. By the end of the lesson, students should be able to describe common floor finishes, explain floor preparation steps, and identify suitable mixes for screed and terrazzo, as well as the installation method for PVC flooring.

Students should have a basic understanding of concrete work, types of building materials, and the structural components of a building, particularly the floor slab.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

FLOOR FINISHES

Description of Floor Finishing Materials

Floor finishing materials are applied to the structural floor to provide a durable, aesthetic, and functional surface. Common types include:

  1. Cement Finish: A smooth, hard finish created by applying a rich cement mortar directly onto a concrete slab. It is durable and economical.
  2. Cement Screed: A layer of cement and sand mortar applied over a concrete base to achieve a smooth, level surface. It often serves as a base for other floor finishes like tiles or carpets.
  3. Terrazzo: A composite material used for floors, poured in place or precast. It consists of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other suitable chips, mixed with a binder (cementitious or polymeric) and polished to a smooth, decorative surface.
  4. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Tiles/Sheets: A resilient flooring material made from synthetic plastic. It is durable, water-resistant, easy to clean, and comes in various colours and patterns. It is installed using adhesives.

Preparation of Floor for Finishing

Proper preparation of the subfloor is essential for the longevity and quality of the final finish. Key steps include:

  1. Cleaning: Ensure the subfloor is entirely free from dirt, dust, oil, grease, and any loose debris.
  2. Leveling: The subfloor must be level and even. Uneven surfaces should be patched or screeded to create a smooth, flat plane.
  3. Drying: Ensure the subfloor is adequately dry, especially for finishes like PVC that are sensitive to moisture.
  4. Repairing Cracks/Holes: Fill any cracks or holes in the subfloor with appropriate repair materials to prevent future issues.
  5. Priming: Apply a primer or bonding agent for certain finishes to improve adhesion and prevent moisture penetration.

Mixes and Installation for Floor Finishing

The composition and application methods vary depending on the chosen material:

  1. Cement Screed Mix:
    1. Typically a 1:3 or 1:4 mix of cement to sharp sand (by volume).
    2. Water is added to achieve a workable consistency.
    3. Laid to a specified thickness (e.g., 25-50mm), levelled, and compacted using a trowel or float.
    4. Requires proper curing (keeping it moist) for several days to achieve maximum strength and prevent cracking.
  2. Terrazzo Mix:
    1. Consists of cement (often white or pigmented), marble/granite chips, and water.
    2. A common mix ratio for the topping might be 1 part cement to 2 parts aggregate (chips).
    3. Ebonite or metal strips are often used to create panels before pouring to control cracking and create patterns.
    4. After initial curing, the surface is ground and polished to expose the aggregate and achieve a smooth finish.
  3. PVC Flooring Installation:
    1. PVC tiles or sheets are typically adhered to a clean, level, and dry subfloor.
    2. A suitable adhesive (e.g., acrylic-based) is spread evenly on the prepared subfloor using a notched trowel.
    3. The PVC material is carefully laid onto the adhesive, ensuring no air bubbles, and then rolled with a heavy roller for proper bond and to remove trapped air.

Differentiation

For learners who may struggle, provide simplified diagrams of floor preparation steps and pre-labelled samples of materials. Pair them with faster learners for the practical demonstration of screed mixing. For faster learners, challenge them to research alternative floor finishing materials not covered in class, such as epoxy flooring or timber flooring, and present their findings.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan

This lesson plan focuses on practical understanding of floor finishes. Ensure you have actual samples of the materials (cement, sand, PVC tile, small chips for terrazzo) and basic tools like a head pan and shovel for a small-scale demonstration of screed mixing. Emphasize safety during any practical activity. Guide students to clearly identify and differentiate between the materials and understand the logical sequence of floor preparation. When discussing the site visit, stress safety protocols and what specific aspects of floor finishing students should observe. Encourage students to copy the Board Summary notes during Step 8 to ensure they have accurate information for future reference and examinations. Check for understanding frequently through questioning, especially during the description of materials and preparation steps. For weaker learners, provide extra visual aids and simplified explanations. For advanced learners, encourage critical thinking about material selection based on building function and budget.
