Parts of a Ceiling

While ceiling structures can vary, common parts include:

  1. Ceiling Boards/Panels: The main visible surface material, such as gypsum board, PVC panels, or acoustic tiles.
  2. Battens/Furring Strips: Wooden or metal strips fixed to the structural members (joists, rafters) to which the ceiling boards are attached. They provide a level surface for fixing.

Materials Used for Ceiling

  6. Fibre Cement Boards: Made from cement, cellulose fibres, and sand, these are durable, water-resistant, and fire-resistant.
  7. Fibreboard (e.g., Celotex): Boards made from compressed wood or plant fibres, often used for insulation and sound dampening.
  8. Asbestos Cement Boards: (Historically used) Boards made from cement and asbestos fibres. While durable and fire-resistant, asbestos is now largely avoided due to severe health risks associated with its fibres. Modern alternatives are preferred.
