Lesson Content/Board Summary
Parts Of Speech: Nouns, Verbs And Adjectives
Introduction to Parts of Speech
Parts of speech are categories of words grouped according to their grammatical function and meaning in a sentence. They help us understand how words work together to create meaning. Common parts of speech include nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.
Meaning of Nouns
A noun is a word that names a person, animal, place, thing, idea, quality, or event. Nouns are often described as naming words.
Examples:
- Person: teacher, Mary, boy, student
- Animal: dog, lion, bird, cat
- Place: school, Lagos, market, Nigeria
- Thing: table, book, phone, water
- Idea/Quality/Event: happiness, freedom, love, beauty, independence
Features of Nouns
Nouns have several distinct features:
- Naming Function: They name specific or general entities.
- Number: They can be singular (one) or plural (more than one), e.g., book (singular), books (plural).
- Gender: They can indicate gender (masculine, feminine, common, neuter), e.g., man, woman, student, table.
- Case: They can show their relationship to other words in a sentence (e.g., subject, object, possessive), e.g., The boy’s book.
- Determiners: They are often preceded by determiners like articles (a, an, the) or demonstratives (this, that, these, those).
Types of Nouns
Nouns are broadly classified into different types based on what they name:
- Proper Nouns: These are names of specific persons, places, or things. They always begin with a capital letter.
Examples: John, Lagos, Monday, Nigeria, River Niger
- Common Nouns: These are general names for persons, places, animals, or things. They do not begin with a capital letter unless they start a sentence.
Examples: boy, city, day, country, river
- Collective Nouns: These refer to a group of persons, animals, or things as a single unit.
Examples: team, flock, family, class, army, crowd
- Abstract Nouns: These name ideas, qualities, feelings, or concepts that cannot be seen, touched, heard, smelled, or tasted.
Examples: love, freedom, happiness, courage, peace, truth
- Concrete Nouns: These name things that can be perceived by the five senses (seen, touched, heard, smelled, or tasted).
Examples: table, chair, water, music, flower, stone
Uses of Nouns in Sentences (Functions of Nouns)
Nouns perform various functions in a sentence:
- Subject of a Verb: The noun performs the action of the verb.
Example: The boy ran home.
- Object of a Verb: The noun receives the action of the verb.
Example: She ate the apple.
- Object of a Preposition: The noun follows a preposition.
Example: He walked to the market.
- Complement: The noun renames or describes the subject or object.
Example: My father is a teacher.
Identifying Nouns in Sentences
To identify nouns, look for words that name persons, animals, places, things, or ideas. Also, consider their features and functions in the sentence.
Examples:
- Mary bought a new book from the store. (Proper Noun, Common Noun, Common Noun)
- The team showed great courage during the game. (Collective Noun, Abstract Noun, Common Noun)
- Lions are wild animals that live in the jungle. (Common Noun, Common Noun, Common Noun)

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan
Before the lesson, ensure you have clear definitions and examples for each noun type ready. Prepare short passages or sentences for students to practice identifying nouns. Begin by engaging students with a general discussion about words and their roles to introduce parts of speech. Follow the sequence of explaining meaning, features, types, and uses of nouns, providing ample examples and allowing students to contribute. Encourage active participation during the identification activities. During Step 6, briefly acknowledge verbs and adjectives as other parts of speech, but keep the focus on nouns as per the content scope. Students should copy the Board Summary notes after the main teaching and practice activities. Pay attention to common errors such as confusing proper and common nouns or misidentifying abstract nouns. Provide additional support and examples for students who are finding the concepts challenging, and offer extension exercises for those who grasp the concepts quickly.
