Note for teachers using this lesson plan
This lesson plan addresses the various aspects of adjectives, including their meaning, features, types, and uses. It also incorporates a review of nouns and a brief introduction to verbs to enable students to identify all three parts of speech in texts. Ensure you have clear examples and short passages ready for demonstration and student practice. By the end of the lesson, students should be able to confidently explain adjectives and identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives in sentences.

Lesson Content/Board Summary
Parts Of Speech: Nouns, Verbs And Adjectives
Adjectives
Meaning of Adjectives
An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. It provides more information about the noun or pronoun, telling us about its quality, quantity, size, colour, or other characteristics.
Examples: beautiful girl, tall building, three books, red car.
Features of Adjectives
- Adjectives usually come before the noun they describe (e.g., a happy child).
- They can also come after a linking verb (e.g., The child is happy).
- Adjectives can be graded (e.g., big, bigger, biggest; beautiful, more beautiful, most beautiful).
- They answer questions like “What kind?”, “Which one?”, “How many?”, or “Whose?”.
Types of Adjectives
- Descriptive Adjectives: Describe the quality or characteristic of a noun (e.g., kind, brave, sweet, blue).
- Quantitative Adjectives: Indicate the quantity of a noun (e.g., many, few, some, all).
- Demonstrative Adjectives: Point out specific nouns (e.g., this, that, these, those).
- Possessive Adjectives: Show ownership or possession (e.g., my, your, his, her, its, our, their).
- Interrogative Adjectives: Used with nouns to ask questions (e.g., which book, whose pen, what colour).
- Numeral Adjectives: Indicate exact numbers or order (e.g., one, two, first, second).
Uses of Adjectives
Adjectives are used to:
- Provide details about nouns (e.g., The old man walked slowly).
- Make descriptions more vivid and interesting (e.g., She wore a sparkling dress).
- Compare nouns (e.g., This is a taller tree than that one).
- Specify or identify particular nouns (e.g., These students are diligent).
Nouns
Meaning of Nouns
A noun is a word that names a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.
Examples: teacher, Lagos, dog, table, happiness.
Features of Nouns
- Nouns can be singular or plural (e.g., boy/boys).
- They can be common or proper (e.g., city/Abuja).
- Nouns can be countable or uncountable (e.g., book/water).
- They can show possession (e.g., boy’s toy).
Types of Nouns
- Common Nouns: General names for people, places, things, or ideas (e.g., girl, city, book).
- Proper Nouns: Specific names for people, places, or organisations, always capitalized (e.g., Mary, Nigeria, UNICEF).
- Collective Nouns: Names for a group of people, animals, or things (e.g., team, flock, bunch).
- Abstract Nouns: Names for ideas, qualities, or feelings that cannot be seen or touched (e.g., love, courage, freedom).
- Concrete Nouns: Names for things that can be perceived by the senses (e.g., house, flower, music).
Functions of Nouns in Sentences
Nouns can function as:
- Subject of a verb: The boy ran home.
- Object of a verb: She ate the apple.
- Object of a preposition: He went to the market.
- Complement: He is a doctor.
Verbs
Meaning of Verbs
A verb is a word that describes an action, state, or occurrence. It tells what the subject of a sentence does or is.
Examples: run, eat, is, sleep.
Identifying Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives in Texts
To identify these parts of speech in a text:
- Look for words that name people, places, animals, things, or ideas (Nouns).
- Look for words that show action or a state of being (Verbs).
- Look for words that describe nouns or pronouns (Adjectives).

Teaching Skill: Applying/Demonstrating
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains how adjectives are used to provide details, make descriptions vivid, compare nouns, and specify particular nouns. The teacher gives sentences and asks students to explain the function of the adjective in each.
Pupils’ Activity: Students identify the uses of adjectives in example sentences and create their own sentences demonstrating these uses.
Learning Point: Adjective sentence roles
Step 5: Nouns (Meaning, Features, Types, Functions)
Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Reviewing/Consolidating
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher quickly reviews the meaning of nouns, their features (singular/plural, common/proper), types (common, proper, collective, abstract, concrete), and functions in sentences (subject, object, complement), providing quick examples for each point.
Pupils’ Activity: Students recall and confirm their understanding of nouns, providing examples when prompted.
Learning Point: Noun characteristics
Step 6: Verbs (Meaning) and Identification Practice
Time: 8 minutes

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan
Before the lesson, ensure you have prepared clear examples of adjectives, nouns, and verbs, either on the whiteboard, chart paper, or as flashcards. The lesson is quite comprehensive, so manage time effectively for each segment. Begin by activating prior knowledge of nouns to build a foundation. When teaching adjectives, use vivid examples to make the concept concrete. For the identification practice, provide a variety of short sentences. During note-taking, guide students to copy the Board Summary accurately. Pay close attention to common errors where students might confuse adjectives with adverbs or struggle to differentiate between different types of adjectives. Encourage peer learning during group activities and provide individual support as needed. Ensure all students participate in the oral and written activities.
