The Ogun State Government has taken a significant step toward improving safety in schools with the inauguration of a multi-sectoral Safe Schools Steering Committee. The committee was established to address existing and emerging security challenges in schools across the state while creating a safer and more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The newly inaugurated committee is expected to provide strategic leadership in the development and implementation of policies, programmes, and initiatives aimed at enhancing school safety. Its responsibilities will also include strengthening emergency preparedness and promoting effective collaboration among stakeholders in the education sector.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, emphasized the importance of the committee in safeguarding the future of learners across Ogun State. He noted that members were carefully selected based on their expertise, experience, and institutional responsibilities.
According to the commissioner, the initiative represents a proactive response by the state government to strengthen partnerships between government agencies, security organizations, communities, development partners, and other stakeholders involved in education.
Prof. Arigbabu explained that ensuring school safety requires coordinated efforts and effective leadership. He urged committee members to carry out their responsibilities with dedication, professionalism, and integrity, stressing that the quality of decisions made today will have a lasting impact on the well-being and educational success of children in the state.
He further stated that every school should remain a place where students can learn in an atmosphere of safety, hope, and opportunity. The committee is therefore expected to play a key role in creating policies and systems that will protect learners, teachers, and school communities.
Other speakers at the event highlighted the need for collective responsibility in maintaining secure learning environments. They noted that school safety is not solely the responsibility of government but requires active participation from parents, communities, security agencies, school administrators, and development partners.
Stakeholders also stressed that vigilance, innovation, collaboration, and sustained commitment are essential for protecting schools and ensuring uninterrupted learning. They expressed confidence that the work of the committee will contribute significantly to the educational development and future success of thousands of learners across Ogun State.
The inauguration of the Safe Schools Steering Committee reflects the state’s commitment to creating secure learning environments where students and teachers can thrive without fear, ultimately supporting improved educational outcomes throughout the state.
