Government Comprehensive Secondary School (GCSS), Borikiri, Port Harcourt, has emerged as the overall winner of the 2026 Nigeria LNG (NLNG) Science Contest after outperforming six other schools in the highly competitive event.

The competition, organised by Nigeria LNG in partnership with the Rivers State Ministry of Education and the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), brought together some of the state’s brightest science students to showcase their knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Participants were tested in several key subjects, including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, and special wildcard categories. At the end of the contest, GCSS Borikiri secured first place with 57,189 points, ahead of Niger Delta Science School, which finished second with 49,135 points. Enitonia High School, Port Harcourt, claimed third place with 47,686 points.

Other schools that participated in the competition included Government Secondary School, Eneka; Community Secondary School, Rumuomasi; Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Borokiri; and Comprehensive High School, Alesa, Eleme.

As part of the rewards package, the top three schools received science laboratory equipment, science textbooks, laptops, and other educational materials aimed at strengthening science teaching and learning.

The event also featured a Science Project Exhibition, where students demonstrated innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Government Girls Secondary School, Oromenike, emerged as the overall winner in the exhibition category with an average score of 83.3. Comprehensive Secondary School, Ogidigba, secured second place, while Government Girls Secondary School, Finimah, finished third.

Speaking during the grand finale, NLNG’s General Manager for External Relations and Sustainable Development, Sophia Horsfall, described the competition as a platform for nurturing excellence and innovation among young learners.

She explained that the competition has evolved from a traditional science quiz into a broader science contest designed to encourage students to apply scientific knowledge to solving practical problems. According to her, the goal is to develop critical thinking, creativity, and innovation among young people who will shape the future through science and technology.

Horsfall noted that the 2026 edition was built around the theme, “Powering Tomorrow Through Science and Innovation Solutions,” reflecting the growing importance of scientific discovery and technological advancement in national development.

She also expressed delight at the strong participation of female students, emphasizing that talent and innovation are not limited by gender. She encouraged all finalists to view the competition not merely as a contest but as an opportunity to contribute solutions that can improve society.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, commended NLNG for its continued investment in education and youth development. He stated that initiatives such as the science contest play a vital role in preparing students for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

According to the commissioner, education remains the foundation for scientific advancement because it equips learners with the critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills needed to transform ideas into practical solutions.

He further reaffirmed the commitment of the Rivers State Government, under the leadership of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to improving educational infrastructure, strengthening teacher capacity, enhancing curriculum delivery, and promoting STEM education across the state.

The success of the 2026 NLNG Science Contest highlights the importance of investing in science education and innovation as Nigeria works toward building a more technologically advanced and knowledge-driven future.
