    Instructional Materials

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will employ the help of the following materials:

    • Whiteboard or chart
    • Markers
    • Samples of different plastics and rubbers
    • Pictures of various plastic and rubber products

    Rationale for the Lesson

This lesson is crucial for pupils to understand the different types of materials and their uses. This knowledge will help them make informed choices about the materials they use and appreciate the importance of material selection in various applications.

    Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

The teacher will begin by asking pupils what materials they see around them in the classroom and at home. The teacher will then introduce the topic of materials and maintenance, emphasizing its importance in daily life.

    Lesson content

    What is Plastic?

Plastic is a synthetic material made from polymers. It’s lightweight, durable, and easily molded into different shapes. We use plastic in many things, like bottles, bags, toys, and furniture. it’s a synthetic material commonly used because of its versatility.

    what is Rubber?

Rubber is a material, either natural or synthetic, that’s stretchy. It’s used to make things like tires, erasers, and shoe soles. we also find it in hoses, belts, and gloves.

    Types of Materials

    Plastic

Many different kinds of plastic exist, each with its own special qualities. The following are examples:

    1. PET (polyethylene Terephthalate): Used for bottles, food containers, and clothing fibers.
    2. HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): Used for milk jugs, detergent bottles, and pipes.
    3. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Used for pipes, window frames, and flooring.
    4. PP (Polypropylene): used for packaging, containers, and carpets.
    5. PS (Polystyrene): Used for disposable cups, plates, and food containers.
    6. LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene): Used for plastic bags, films, and shrink wrap.
    7. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): Used for toys, car parts, and appliances.
    8. PC (Polycarbonate): used for optical discs, safety glasses, and water bottles.
    9. Acrylic (PMMA): Used for shatterproof windows, lenses, and signs.
    10. Nylon (Polyamide): Used for ropes, fabrics, and machine parts.
    Rubber

There are two main types of rubber:

    1. Natural rubber: Comes from the sap of rubber trees. It’s used in tires, gloves, and erasers.
    2. Synthetic rubber: Made from petroleum. It’s used in tires, hoses, and belts.
    3. Silicone Rubber: Used for baking molds, sealants, and medical implants.
    4. neoprene Rubber: Used for wetsuits, laptop sleeves, and electrical insulation.
