Different Roles of Members of the Family

Introduction to Family Roles

God designed the family as the basic unit of society. For a family to function well and live in peace, each member has specific roles and responsibilities given by God. When everyone understands and fulfills their roles, the family experiences harmony and blessings.

Roles of the Husband/Father

The Bible teaches that the husband is the head of the home, and he has specific responsibilities:

  • Love his wife: He should love his wife as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).
  • Provide for the family: He is responsible for the financial and physical well-being of the family.
  • Protect his family: He must safeguard his wife and children.
  • Lead the family spiritually: He should guide his family in faith and moral values.
  • Be understanding: He should live with his wife in an understanding way (1 Peter 3:7).

Roles of the Wife/Mother

The wife also has important roles that contribute to the family’s strength:

  • Respect her husband: She should respect her husband (Ephesians 5:33).
  • Manage the home: She is often responsible for the day-to-day running of the household.
  • Nurture children: She plays a key role in raising and caring for the children.
  • Be a helper: She is a suitable helper for her husband.
  • Be submissive: She should submit to her husband as to the Lord (Ephesians 5:22-24, Colossians 3:18).

Roles of the Children

Children also have God-given responsibilities towards their parents:

  • Obey parents: Children should obey their parents in the Lord, for this is right (Ephesians 6:1).
  • Honour parents: They should honour their father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise (Ephesians 6:2-3).
  • Respect elders: Show respect to all elders in the family and community.

Memory Verse

Ephesians 6:1: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”

Bible Reading

  • Ephesians 6:1-9
  • Ephesians 5:21, 33
  • Colossians 3:18-21

Lesson Keywords

  • Roles – The duties or functions that a person is expected to perform in a family.
  • Husband – A married man, often the father of children.
  • Wife – A married woman, often the mother of children.
  • Obey – To follow the commands or instructions of someone in authority.
  • Honour – To show great respect for someone or something.

Differentiation

For pupils who grasp concepts quickly, the teacher will encourage them to research additional biblical passages on family relationships and discuss how these roles apply in modern Nigerian families. For pupils who need more support, the teacher will provide simplified explanations, use visual aids more extensively, and pair them with stronger pupils for group activities to ensure comprehension of the core roles.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Teachers should encourage pupils to share examples from their own family experiences (respectfully and appropriately) to make the lesson relatable. Emphasize that while roles are distinct, they are meant to complement each other for the overall good of the family. Encourage practical application of the biblical principles discussed.
