  • Butt Joint: This joint is formed by placing two pieces of metal edge-to-edge in the same plane and welding along the seam. It is often used for joining plates of similar thickness.
  • Lap Joint: A lap joint is created by overlapping two pieces of metal and welding along the overlapping edges. It is simple to prepare but may not be suitable for heavy loads.
  • Tee Joint: This joint is formed when two pieces of metal are joined at a 90-degree angle, resembling the letter ‘T’. One piece is placed perpendicular to the surface of the other.

Welding Defects

Welding defects are imperfections or flaws that compromise the quality, strength, and integrity of a weld. These defects can lead to structural failure if not properly addressed.

The following are common types of welding defects:

  • Blow Hole (Porosity): These are small, spherical gas pockets trapped within the weld metal. They are often caused by gases (like hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen) released during solidification of the molten metal, which are unable to escape before the weld freezes.
  • Cupping (Undercut): This defect appears as a groove melted into the base metal adjacent to the toe of the weld, reducing the thickness of the base metal. It is typically caused by excessive current, too fast travel speed, or improper electrode angle.
  • Cracking of Weld: Cracks are fractures in the weld metal or the heat-affected zone. They can be caused by high residual stresses, poor ductility of the weld metal, rapid cooling, or the presence of impurities (e.g., sulfur) in the base metal. Cracks can be hot cracks (formed during solidification) or cold cracks (formed after cooling).
