Meaning of SMAW

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), also known as manual metal arc welding (MMAW) or stick welding, is a welding process that uses a consumable electrode coated in flux to lay the weld. An electric arc is formed between the electrode and the base material, melting both and forming a weld pool. The flux coating on the electrode disintegrates, producing shielding gases and slag to protect the weld from atmospheric contamination.

Principle of Operation of SMAW

The principle of SMAW involves striking an electric arc between a flux-coated consumable electrode and the workpiece. The heat generated by the arc melts the tip of the electrode and the surface of the workpiece, creating a molten weld pool. The flux coating on the electrode decomposes due to the heat, producing a gaseous shield that protects the molten metal from oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere. The flux also forms a layer of slag over the solidifying weld, which further protects it and helps to shape the weld bead. As the weld cools, the slag is chipped away.

SMAW Equipment

The essential equipment for Shielded Metal Arc Welding includes:

  • Welding Power Source (Transformer/Rectifier): Supplies the electric current for welding. It can be AC (Alternating Current) or DC (Direct Current).
  • Electrode Holder: A clamp-like device used to hold the electrode firmly and conduct the welding current to it.

  • AC Welding Machine: Supplies current that periodically reverses direction. It is generally simpler and less expensive. AC welding is often used for heavy-duty applications and on certain types of electrodes.
  • DC Welding Machine: Supplies current that flows in one direction only. DC welding provides a smoother arc, better arc control, and is suitable for a wider range of electrodes and materials.
  • Rectifier: A component within a welding machine that converts AC input power into DC output power. Welding machines that can provide both AC and DC output typically include a rectifier.
