Lesson Content/Board Summary

Forging Tools and Equipment

Forging Equipment

Forging equipment refers to the main machinery and structures used to facilitate the forging process. These provide the necessary environment and support for shaping metal.

The following are common forging equipment:

  • Forge: A furnace or hearth used to heat metal to its plastic state (red hot) before shaping. It can be coal-fired, gas-fired, or electric.
  • Anvil: A heavy block, usually made of hardened steel, with a flat top surface (face), a horn (conical end), and a hardy hole. It provides a solid surface for hammering and shaping hot metal.
  • Bench Vice: A mechanical device used to secure workpieces firmly. Forging often requires a heavy-duty vice to hold metal during operations like twisting or bending.
  • Swage Block: A heavy block of steel with various shaped indentations (grooves, holes, curves) used for forming and finishing operations like bending, punching, or fullering.

Forging Tools

Forging tools are handheld or hand-operated implements used directly to manipulate and shape the hot metal on the anvil.

The following are common forging tools:

  • Hammers: Used for striking the hot metal. Different types include:
    • Ball-peen hammer: Has a round peen for riveting and shaping.
    • Cross-peen hammer: Has a wedge-shaped peen perpendicular to the handle, used for drawing out metal.
    • Straight-peen hammer: Has a wedge-shaped peen parallel to the handle, also used for drawing out metal.
    • Sledge hammer: A heavy hammer used for striking large pieces or for striking other tools (like drifts and punches).
  • Tongs: Pincer-like tools used for holding hot metal securely while it is being worked. Various types exist for different shapes and sizes of metal (e.g., flat jaw tongs, bolt jaw tongs, pick-up tongs).
  • Cold Set: A chisel-like tool with a sharp, hardened edge used for cutting cold metal on the anvil.
  • Hot Set: A chisel-like tool with a slightly blunter, less hardened edge used for cutting hot metal. It is designed to retain its edge at high temperatures.
  • Hardies: Tools with a square shank that fit into the hardy hole of an anvil. They are used as bottom tools for cutting, bending, or shaping. Examples include the hot cut hardy (for hot metal) and cold cut hardy (for cold metal).

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Discussion, Lecture, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Visual Aids

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and reminds them about general workshop safety. The teacher then asks pupils what they know about shaping metal by heating it.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and share their prior knowledge about metal shaping.
Learning Point: Pupils are introduced to the concept of forging and its importance.

Step 2: Explanation of Forging Equipment

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Identification
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher introduces and explains the various forging equipment, such as the forge, anvil, bench vice, and swage block, using visual aids or actual equipment where available.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen attentively, observe the equipment, and ask questions for clarification.
Learning Point: Pupils identify and understand the function of different forging equipment.

Step 3: Explanation of Forging Tools

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Identification
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher introduces and explains various forging tools like hammers (ball-peen, cross-peen, straight-peen, sledge), tongs, cold set, hot set, and hardies, highlighting their specific uses.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the tools, listen to explanations, and take notes.
Learning Point: Pupils identify and understand the function of different forging tools.

Step 4: Demonstration of Forging Process (Equipment)

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher demonstrates how to safely heat a piece of mild steel in the forge furnace to a working temperature (red hot).
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the heating process and safety procedures carefully.
Learning Point: Pupils understand the initial step of heating metal for forging.

Step 5: Demonstration of Forging Process (Tools)

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher demonstrates how to hold the hot metal with tongs and use a hammer on the anvil to begin shaping it, emphasizing safety and technique.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils pay close attention to the teacher’s technique and safety measures.
Learning Point: Pupils observe the practical application of forging tools in shaping metal.

Step 6: Practical Activity/Pupil Engagement

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils in small groups to safely handle the hot metal and practice simple shaping techniques with the provided tools under strict supervision.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils participate in the practical activity, attempting to shape the heated metal using the tools.
Learning Point: Pupils gain hands-on experience in using forging tools and equipment.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. List three examples of forging equipment and state their functions.
  2. Mention two types of hammers used in forging and their specific uses.
  3. Explain the difference between a cold set and a hot set.
  4. Why is it important to use tongs when handling hot metal?

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.
