The Rivers State Government has announced plans to begin the closure of unapproved private schools operating across the state as part of efforts to improve educational standards and strengthen regulatory compliance.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, through a statement released in Port Harcourt. According to the ministry, the enforcement exercise will officially commence on June 15, 2026.

The government explained that the move is aimed at ensuring that all private schools meet the required educational standards and operate within the framework of the state’s education laws. Authorities believe the exercise will help protect the welfare of pupils, improve learning conditions, and promote quality education throughout Rivers State.

Under the new directive, schools operating without registration or official approval from the Ministry of Education will be shut down. The government also warned that schools that fail to comply with established educational standards may face sanctions, including closure.

In addition, approved private schools with outstanding annual renewal fees have been directed to settle all arrears immediately. The ministry emphasized that only schools with valid approval certificates and updated payment records will be permitted to continue operations.

Speaking on the importance of the exercise, Dr. Nwagor stated that the government remains committed to enforcing standards within the education sector and ensuring that every child has access to a safe and conducive learning environment.

The commissioner noted that strengthening quality assurance in schools is essential for improving learning outcomes and maintaining public confidence in the education system. He added that the initiative would support better school administration while safeguarding the future of children in the state.

School proprietors seeking clarification or assistance have been advised to contact the State Quality Assurance Services Office in Port Harcourt for further guidance.

The Rivers State Ministry of Education reassured residents that the enforcement exercise forms part of broader efforts by the state government to enhance educational quality, encourage compliance with regulations, and promote best practices in school management across the state.
