Primary 1 Scheme of Work 2026: New Curriculum Subjects & Downloads

Looking for a Primary 1 Scheme of Work for the new Nigerian curriculum without opening dozens of unrelated pages? This directory brings our current Primary 1 subject and option schemes into one place, with a short preview of what is inside each one before you click through.

August 2026 release-status note: NERDC’s approved Primary 1 offering includes one Nigerian Language, but the newly revised language-file rollout is still not as complete as the core-subject release. The scheme links below show the resources our currently have available; schools should continue checking the official NERDC release before treating an older Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba curriculum file as the final revised document.

Primary 1 deserves careful planning. A six-year-old does not need a scheme that merely says “Topic: Addition” or “Topic: Reading” and leaves the teacher to guess the learning journey. At this stage, lessons should build small, dependable foundations: recognising sounds, reading meaningfully, understanding number, observing the environment, expressing ideas, developing healthy habits and learning how to participate in a community.

What makes our Primary 1 schemes different?

Each scheme is organised around the revised curriculum’s teaching structure rather than a bare list of headings. The weekly tables identify the Topic/Theme, Focal Competencies, Skills, Performance Objectives, Learning Activities and Resources. This makes the scheme useful both to the teacher preparing a lesson and to the head teacher checking whether classroom work is actually moving toward the expected learner outcome.

We also keep the language at the level of the curriculum while arranging the work so teachers can see a realistic progression across First, Second and Third Terms. Revision and assessment are not used as filler weeks; the main teaching weeks carry the actual curriculum content.

How a Primary 1 teacher can use the scheme

  1. Start with the weekly performance objective. It tells you what the pupil should be able to demonstrate, say, identify, read, write, count, compare or do.
  2. Check the topic/content beside it. This prevents a lesson from becoming wider or harder than the curriculum requires.
  3. Use the learning activity as a teaching direction, not a script. You can adapt examples to your pupils, language context and available classroom materials.
  4. Assess the objective, not just copied notes. If the objective says pupils should identify, sort, read or demonstrate, assessment should let them perform that action.

Primary 1 Scheme of Work 2026 – subject directory

There are 13 files in our current Primary 1 release because language and religious-study choices are presented as separate downloadable options. A school does not place every option on one pupil’s timetable; use the files that apply to your programme.

Does this replace the national curriculum?

No. The curriculum is the source framework; the scheme is the implementation plan. If you need to check the approved Primary 1 subject structure or download the curriculum documents themselves, use our Primary 1 New National Curriculum guide or go straight to the Primary 1 curriculum download page.

Primary 1 planning questions teachers often ask

Does one pupil take Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba?

No. The approved structure provides for one Nigerian Language as applicable. Separate files are available so schools can use the language that applies to them.

Should a pupil take both CRS and Islamic Studies?

No. The approved offering distinguishes the applicable religious-study option according to the pupil.

Can I use the scheme to prepare lesson notes?

Yes. The weekly objectives, activities and resources are a strong starting point for lesson-note preparation, but a lesson note should still expand the teaching steps, examples, assessment and differentiation appropriate to your class.

For the national subject list across all school levels, see our full list of subjects in Nigeria’s revised curriculum. For the rollout timeline and what changes in 2026/2027, read the new curriculum implementation guide.
