Note for teachers using this lesson plan
This lesson plan focuses on helping Primary 4 pupils understand and apply nouns and pronouns effectively to achieve clear reference and avoid repetition in their writing and speech. Ensure you have clear examples prepared, perhaps written on flashcards or the whiteboard, to demonstrate how pronouns replace nouns. By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to confidently identify and use appropriate nouns and pronouns to construct grammatically correct and coherent sentences.

Rationale for the Lesson
This lesson is essential for pupils to develop clear and effective communication skills. Understanding how to use nouns and pronouns accurately helps pupils avoid awkward repetition, making their sentences flow better and easier to understand. This skill is fundamental for both written and spoken English, supporting overall grammatical accuracy.
Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
Pupils have a basic understanding of what nouns are (naming words) and have been introduced to simple pronouns in previous classes.
Lesson Content/Board Summary
Nouns and Pronouns: Accurate Reference
What are Nouns?
Nouns are words that name people, animals, places, or things. They are naming words.
- People: teacher, boy, Amina, father
- Animals: dog, lion, cat, bird
- Places: school, market, Abuja, home
- Things: book, table, car, ball
What are Pronouns?
Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns to avoid repeating the noun many times. They help to make sentences clearer and smoother.
- Examples of Pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them.
Using Pronouns to Avoid Repetition
When we write or speak, repeating the same noun too many times can make our sentences sound awkward. Pronouns help us to refer to the noun again without repeating it.
- Original Sentence with Repetition: Amina took Amina’s book.
- Corrected Sentence (using a pronoun): Amina took her book.
More examples:
- The dog barked. The dog chased the cat.
→ The dog barked. It chased the cat. - John and Mary went to the market. John and Mary bought fruits.
→ John and Mary went to the market. They bought fruits. - My mother is kind. My mother loves me.
→ My mother is kind. She loves me.
Making Sentences with Nouns and Pronouns
We use nouns to introduce who or what we are talking about, and then we can use pronouns to refer back to them in later parts of the sentence or in subsequent sentences.
- Nouns in sentences:
- The children played in the park.
- My teacher taught us a new lesson.
- Pronouns in sentences:
- They played happily. (referring to “children”)
- She is very patient. (referring to “teacher”)
- Combined use:
- Chike is a good boy. He always does his homework.
- The book is on the table. Please pick it up.
Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques
Discussion, Explanation, Question and Answer, Guided Practice, Individual Practice, Demonstration.
Instructional Procedures
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Activating Prior Knowledge
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and asks them to recall what they know about nouns. The teacher writes a few nouns on the board and asks pupils to identify them.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils greet the teacher and identify nouns from the examples given. Some may volunteer examples of nouns.
Learning Point: Recall of nouns
Step 2: Explanation of Nouns and Pronouns
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explaining/Defining
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains what nouns are in simple terms, then introduces pronouns as words that take the place of nouns. The teacher gives examples of common pronouns (I, he, she, it, they, we, you).
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen attentively and repeat the examples of pronouns after the teacher.
Learning Point: Noun and pronoun definitions
Step 3: Importance of Avoiding Repetition
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Illustrating/Demonstrating
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher writes a sentence with a repeated noun on the board, e.g., “Musa went to the market. Musa bought some yam.” The teacher reads it aloud and asks pupils if it sounds good. The teacher then explains that pronouns help to avoid this repetition.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, read the sentence, and identify the repetition. They understand the need for pronouns.
Learning Point: Avoiding noun repetition
Step 4: Demonstrating Replacement
Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Modelling/Showing
Teacher’s Activity: Using the previous example, “Musa went to the market. Musa bought some yam,” the teacher demonstrates how to replace the repeated “Musa” with “he.” The teacher provides another example like “Amina took Amina’s book” and shows how to change it to “Amina took her book.”
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the demonstration and suggest other pronouns that could be used in different contexts.
Learning Point: Replacing nouns with pronouns
Step 5: Guided Practice (Editing Sentences)
Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher writes several short sentences with repeated nouns on the board or uses flashcards. Pupils are guided to edit these sentences by replacing the repeated nouns with suitable pronouns. (e.g., “The cat sat on the mat. The cat was black.” -> “The cat sat on the mat. It was black.”)
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils work individually or in pairs to edit the sentences, offering their answers orally.
Learning Point: Editing for clear reference
Step 6: Constructing Sentences
Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Application/Construction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher asks pupils to make their own sentences using a noun first, and then a pronoun to refer to that noun in the same or next sentence. (e.g., “My friend is kind. She helps me.”)
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils construct and share their sentences with the class.
Learning Point: Sentence construction practice
Step 7: Evaluation/Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:
- What is a noun?
- What is a pronoun?
- Change this sentence to avoid repetition: “The girl is happy. The girl is singing.”
- Make a sentence using a noun and then a pronoun to refer to it.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.
Learning Point: Understanding noun-pronoun usage
Step 8: Note-Taking
Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Writing
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils to copy the essential Board Summary notes on nouns and pronouns, and how to use them for clear reference, into their notebooks.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils/students copy the notes carefully into their notebooks.
Learning Point: Recording lesson summary
Step 9: Conclusion
Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarizing
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher briefly reminds pupils that using nouns and pronouns correctly makes their English clear and easy to understand, then dismisses the class.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and prepare for the next lesson.
Learning Point: Importance of clear reference
Continuous Assessment/Further Study
Type: Homework
Instruction: Rewrite the following sentences, replacing the repeated nouns with suitable pronouns to make them clearer.
- My brother loves to play football. My brother plays every evening.
- The car is red. The car is parked outside.
- The birds are singing. The birds are in the tree.
- My sister and I went to the shop. My sister and I bought some sweets.
- The book is interesting. I am reading the book.
Lesson Keywords
- Noun – A word that names a person, place, animal, or thing.
- Pronoun – A word that takes the place of a noun.
- Repetition – Saying or writing something again and again.
- Reference – Referring to something or someone.
Differentiation
For weaker learners: Provide simpler sentences with clear singular nouns for replacement. Offer a limited choice of pronouns to select from. Use visual aids like pictures to represent nouns.
For faster learners: Challenge them to write short paragraphs where they intentionally use pronouns to avoid repetition. Ask them to identify different types of pronouns (e.g., subject pronouns, object pronouns).

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan
Before the lesson, ensure you have prepared flashcards or written examples of sentences with repeated nouns and corresponding pronouns. Begin by reviewing nouns to ensure pupils have a solid foundation. Emphasise the concept of avoiding repetition by demonstrating awkward sentences and then showing how pronouns provide a smoother alternative. Guide pupils through the activity of editing sentences, providing immediate feedback. Encourage pupils to construct their own sentences, as this reinforces understanding and application. During the note-taking stage, ensure pupils copy the Board Summary accurately. Pay attention to pupils who might struggle with selecting the correct pronoun (e.g., confusing ‘he’ and ‘she’) and provide extra support and practice. For advanced learners, challenge them to create longer sentences or short stories using varied pronouns. Regularly check for understanding through questions and encourage peer correction.
