Lesson Content/Board Summary

Comprehension: Main and Supporting Ideas

Understanding Main and Supporting Ideas

When we read a passage, especially one that gives us information, it is important to find the most important message. This is called the main idea. The other sentences in the passage give more details and examples that explain or prove the main idea. These are called supporting ideas or supporting facts.

What is a Main Idea?

The main idea is the most important point or message the author wants to share about the topic. It is often a general statement that the rest of the passage explains.

What are Supporting Ideas/Facts?

Supporting ideas or facts are the details, examples, reasons, or explanations that help to make the main idea clear and believable. They give more information about the main idea.

Sample Health Passage: The Importance of Handwashing

Handwashing is a very important habit for staying healthy. Our hands touch many things throughout the day, picking up tiny germs that we cannot see. If we don’t wash these germs off, they can get into our bodies when we eat or touch our faces, making us sick. Washing our hands properly with soap and clean water helps to remove these harmful germs. This simple act can prevent common illnesses like colds, flu, and diarrhea from spreading to ourselves and others. Therefore, always remember to wash your hands before eating, after using the toilet, and after playing outside.

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Engaging/Questioning

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and asks them to recall what they learned about reading comprehension in previous lessons. The teacher then introduces the topic by explaining that today they will learn to find the most important message and the details that explain it in a passage.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and listen attentively to the introduction.

Learning Point: Lesson introduction

Step 2: Explanation of Main Idea

Time: 7 minutes

Teaching Skill: Explaining/Defining

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains what a “main idea” is, using simple language and examples. The teacher writes the definition on the board and points to the sample health passage, explaining that they will find its main idea.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, ask questions for clarity, and repeat the definition of “main idea” after the teacher.

Learning Point: Main idea definition

Step 3: Explanation of Supporting Ideas

Time: 7 minutes

Teaching Skill: Explaining/Illustrating

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains what “supporting ideas” or “supporting facts” are, emphasizing that these details help to prove or explain the main idea. The teacher gives simple analogies, like a table needing legs to stand (main idea is the tabletop, legs are supporting ideas).

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, understand the concept of supporting details, and offer simple examples.

Learning Point: Supporting ideas definition

Step 4: Passage Reading

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Reading Aloud/Modeling

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher displays the “Sample Health Passage: The Importance of Handwashing” on the board or chart. The teacher reads the passage aloud clearly, and then asks pupils to read it silently or in turns.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen carefully as the teacher reads, then read the passage silently or aloud.

Learning Point: Health passage reading

Step 5: Guided Identification – Main Idea

Time: 6 minutes

Teaching Skill: Guiding/Questioning

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides the pupils to identify the main idea of the passage by asking questions like, “What is the most important thing this passage is telling us about handwashing?” or “What is the passage mostly about?”. The teacher helps them formulate the main idea and writes it on the board.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils discuss and suggest what they think the main idea is, with teacher’s guidance.

Learning Point: Main idea identification

Step 6: Guided Identification – Supporting Ideas

Time: 6 minutes

Teaching Skill: Facilitating/Prompting

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher now guides pupils to find sentences or phrases in the passage that support or explain the main idea. The teacher asks, “What details in the passage tell us *why* handwashing is important?” or “What examples are given?”. The teacher lists these supporting ideas on the board.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify and state the supporting facts from the passage, with the teacher’s help.

Learning Point: Supporting facts identification

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. What is the main idea of the passage we read today?
  2. Mention two supporting facts from the passage that explain why handwashing is important.
  3. How can identifying main and supporting ideas help you understand what you read?

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.

Learning Point: Main and supporting ideas identified

Step 8: Note-Taking

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Guided Writing

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils to copy the essential Board Summary notes, including the definitions, the passage, and the identified main and supporting ideas, into their notebooks.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the notes carefully into their notebooks.

Learning Point: Notes copying

Step 9: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes

Teaching Skill: Summarizing/Reinforcing

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher briefly reminds pupils that finding the main idea and supporting facts makes them better readers and helps them understand any text, especially health information. The teacher encourages them to practice this skill when reading at home.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and acknowledge the importance of the skill.

Learning Point: Lesson consolidation

Continuous Assessment/Further Study

Type: Homework

Instruction: Read the short passage below and answer the questions that follow in your notebook.

Passage:

Eating healthy food is important for our bodies. Fruits and vegetables give us vitamins that help us fight sickness. Foods like rice and yam give us energy to play and learn. Milk and eggs help our bones and muscles grow strong. When we eat healthy, we feel good and can do many things.

  1. What is the main idea of this passage?
  2. List three supporting facts that explain why eating healthy food is important.

Lesson Keywords

  • Health – The state of being free from illness or injury.

Differentiation

For weaker learners: Provide a simpler, shorter passage with the main idea clearly stated in the first sentence. Guide them sentence by sentence to identify supporting details. Use flashcards with key words from the passage to aid vocabulary understanding.

For faster learners: Challenge them with a slightly longer or more complex passage. Ask them to summarize the main idea in their own words and to explain how the supporting details strengthen the main point. They can also create a simple mind map of the passage.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan

Before the lesson, ensure you have a clear, age-appropriate health passage ready, either written on the board, a chart, or printed out for each pupil. The passage should be concise and have a clearly identifiable main idea and a few distinct supporting facts. During the lesson, actively engage pupils through questions and discussions, allowing them to discover the main and supporting ideas themselves with your guidance. Emphasize that the main idea is like the “big picture” and supporting ideas are the “small details” that paint that picture. During Step 8, ensure pupils copy the Board Summary accurately into their notebooks. For weaker learners, you may need to read the passage several times and point to specific sentences. For faster learners, encourage them to think critically about how the ideas are connected. Always check for understanding after each key explanation.
