Rationale for the Lesson
This lesson helps pupils understand and use measuring and ordering weight through familiar objects, clear examples and guided practice. It builds a foundation for accurate mathematical thinking in school and daily life.
Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
Pupils can count familiar objects, follow simple instructions and use basic number language needed for the lesson. The teacher should check this quickly with concrete materials before introducing the new work.
Lesson Content/Board Summary
Measuring and Ordering Weight
Measuring Weight
A weighing scale is an instrument used to measure weight. A person’s weight is commonly recorded in kilograms (kg).
Using a Weighing Scale
An accurate reading is obtained when a weighing scale is placed and used correctly. The steps are:
- Place the scale on a flat floor.
- Check that it begins at zero.
- Remove heavy bags and stand still in the centre.
- Read the number shown.
- Write the number with kg.
Ordering Measured Weights
Ascending order is from the lightest value to the heaviest. Descending order is from the heaviest value to the lightest.
Example 1: Arrange 22 kg, 18 kg, 25 kg and 20 kg in ascending order.
Solution
Answer: 18 kg, 20 kg, 22 kg, 25 kg.
Example 2: Arrange 16 kg, 24 kg, 19 kg and 21 kg in descending order.
Solution
Answer: 24 kg, 21 kg, 19 kg, 16 kg.
Recording Results
A measured weight is recorded as a number followed by its unit. The table below gives an example:
| Object or code | Weight |
|---|---|
| A | 18 kg |
| B | 21 kg |
| C | 20 kg |
Every recorded weight must include its unit. For example, write 18 kg, not only 18.
Suggested Lesson Video
The teacher may use this short video after the practical activity to reinforce the lesson.
Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques
Discussion, Demonstration, Guided Practice, Practical Activity and Cooperative Learning.
Instructional Procedures
Step 1: Introduction to Measuring and Ordering Weight
Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction/Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher displays the scale, checks that it rests on a flat floor and asks what quantity it measures.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify the weighing scale and read the kg mark.
Learning Point: A weighing scale measures weight in kilograms.
Step 2: Concept Development
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Observation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher checks zero, places a bag on the scale, waits for the reading and records it with kg.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils call each correct action and read the displayed value.
Learning Point: Accurate weighing requires a level scale, zero check and steady object.
Step 3: Teacher Demonstration
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Modelling
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher organises groups to weigh coded bags or objects, record each kg result and avoid announcing personal weights.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils take turns placing, reading and recording the objects.
Learning Point: Measured weights must always include the unit.
Step 4: Guided Practical Work
Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher gives 22 kg, 18 kg, 25 kg and 20 kg for ordering.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils arrange the weights in ascending and descending order.
Learning Point: Recorded weights can be ordered from lightest to heaviest or the reverse.
Step 5: Topic Application
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Practical Activity/Problem Solving
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher checks each group’s work with a weighing scale and coded classroom objects, asks one group to demonstrate and corrects the first observed error.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils present their result, compare it with another group and make the correction where necessary.
Learning Point: Pupils apply measuring and ordering weight with appropriate materials and explain the result.
Step 6: Independent Reinforcement
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Independent Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher writes 16 kg, 24 kg, 19 kg and 21 kg and asks for both ascending and descending arrangements.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils order the four weights independently and retain kg beside every value.
Learning Point: Pupils record and order measured weights accurately.
Step 7: Evaluation/Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates learning by asking the following questions:
- Name the instrument used to measure weight.
- State two steps for using a weighing scale correctly.
- Record a scale reading of 23 kilograms correctly.
- Arrange 17 kg, 25 kg, 20 kg and 19 kg in ascending order.
- Arrange the same weights in descending order.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer the topic questions and carry out the required identification, calculation, drawing, measurement or demonstration with the supplied materials.
Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate the stated knowledge and practical skill for measuring and ordering weight.
Step 8: Conclusion
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summary/Feedback
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher revisits the central demonstration with a weighing scale and coded classroom objects, corrects one likely error and asks pupils to state the rule or property learned.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils state the main rule or property and complete one final oral or practical check.
Learning Point: The defining idea and correct procedure for measuring and ordering weight are retained.
Lesson Keywords
- weighing scale – an instrument used to measure weight
- measure – to find the amount using an instrument
- record – to write down a result
- ascending order – from the lightest number to the heaviest
- descending order – from the heaviest number to the lightest
Differentiation
Support: Use real objects, larger pictures, teacher modelling, paired work and fewer examples at a time. Allow pupils who need help to point, match, count or demonstrate before writing.
Extension: Ask faster pupils to create one additional correct example, explain their method independently or apply the same idea to another familiar situation without moving to a new topic.
Note for teachers using this lesson plan
Make weight measurement respectful and optional; use coded results or classroom objects where needed. Place the scale on a level floor, check zero, and insist that every recorded number includes kg. Use the suggested video only after the concrete explanation or as a short reinforcement; pause it for questions. Understanding is shown when pupils can complete the evaluation task with the correct language, method and unit where required.
