Lesson Content/Board Summary
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Meaning of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is when computers or machines are made to think and learn like humans. They can solve problems, understand language, recognise pictures, and make decisions.
Advantages of Artificial Intelligence
AI helps us in many ways. Some advantages include:
- Makes tasks easier: AI can do repetitive jobs quickly and accurately.
- Saves time: It can automate processes, allowing us to do other things.
- Helps in decision-making: AI can analyse lots of information to help us make better choices.
- Improves safety: It can be used in dangerous situations where humans cannot go.
- Provides entertainment: AI powers many games and smart devices we use for fun.
Face Detection as an AI Application
Face detection is an example of Artificial Intelligence where a computer system can find and identify human faces in images or videos. It works by looking for patterns that match human facial features.
Examples of where face detection is used:
- Unlocking smartphones with your face.
- Tagging friends in photos on social media.
- Security cameras identifying people.
- Taking selfies with special effects.
Creating a Simple Face-Detection Program
We can create a simple face-detection program using visual programming software like Pictoblox. This software uses blocks that you drag and drop to make a program.
Steps to create a simple face-detection program (e.g., using Pictoblox):
- Open the Pictoblox software on the computer or tablet.
- Add the “Face Detection” extension from the extensions menu.
- Use a block like “turn on video on stage with 0% transparency” to activate the camera.
- Use a control block such as “when face detected” to trigger an action.
- Attach an action block, for example, “say Hello!” for 2 seconds, to the “when face detected” block.
- Run the program and see if it detects your face and says “Hello!”.
Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques
Discussion, Demonstration, Guided Practice, Question and Answer, Explanation, Practical Activity.
Instructional Procedures
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Engaging/Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and asks them if they have seen a phone unlock just by looking at someone’s face or if they have played games with smart characters. The teacher then introduces the topic: Artificial Intelligence and Face Detection.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and listen attentively to the introduction.
Learning Point: Introduction to AI
Step 2: Meaning of Artificial Intelligence
Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Illustration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains the meaning of Artificial Intelligence using simple, age-appropriate examples like smart speakers (Alexa, Google Assistant) or robots that can do tasks. The teacher writes the definition on the board.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, ask questions, and try to give their own examples of AI.
Learning Point: AI definition and examples
Step 3: Advantages of AI
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Discussion/Listing
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher discusses with the pupils the benefits of AI, asking them how they think AI can help people. The teacher lists the advantages on the board as pupils contribute.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils share their ideas on the benefits of AI and listen to the teacher’s explanations.
Learning Point: Benefits of AI
Step 4: Face Detection as an AI Application
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains face detection as a practical application of AI. If possible, the teacher demonstrates face detection using a smartphone or a simple online tool, showing how it identifies faces.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the demonstration and explain how face detection works in their own words.
Learning Point: Face detection application
Step 5: Introduction to Pictoblox for Face Detection
Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Guidance
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher opens Pictoblox software (or similar visual programming tool) on the computer/tablet and shows pupils how to add the “Face Detection” extension. The teacher explains the basic blocks needed to turn on the camera.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the teacher’s demonstration and identify the relevant blocks.
Learning Point: Pictoblox face detection setup
Step 6: Creating a Simple Face Detection Program
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice/Facilitation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils, step-by-step, to create a simple program where the computer says “Hello!” when a face is detected. Pupils work in pairs or individually on available devices.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils follow the teacher’s instructions to build and test their simple face detection program.
Learning Point: Building face detection program
Step 7: Evaluation/Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:
- What is Artificial Intelligence?
- Mention two advantages of AI.
- Give an example of an AI application you learned today.
- What software did we use to create a face detection program?
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.
Learning Point: AI concepts assessed
Step 8: Note-Taking
Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Writing
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils to copy the essential Board Summary notes on the meaning of AI, its advantages, face detection, and the steps to create a program into their notebooks.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan
Before the lesson, ensure all computers or tablets are charged and have internet access. Verify that Pictoblox software (or an equivalent visual programming tool) is installed and functional. Familiarise yourself with the basic steps for adding the face detection extension and creating a simple program within Pictoblox. When introducing AI, use relatable examples from pupils’ daily lives to make the concept concrete. During the practical activity, circulate among pupils to provide support and troubleshoot any technical issues. Encourage collaboration, allowing pupils to help each other. Remind pupils to copy the Board Summary notes after the practical session and before the conclusion. Check their understanding throughout the lesson, especially during the evaluation, to identify any misconceptions. For weaker learners, provide extra support and simplify tasks. For faster learners, offer additional challenges to deepen their engagement with AI concepts and programming.
