Selection
Selection is a fundamental method of animal improvement. It involves identifying and retaining animals that possess superior genetic characteristics for breeding purposes, while culling or removing those with undesirable traits.
Principles of Selection:
- Identification of Desirable Traits: This involves determining which characteristics are economically important and worth improving (e.g., high milk yield, fast growth, disease resistance).
- Measurement and Recording: Accurate records of performance (e.g., weight gain, egg production, litter size) are kept for individual animals.
- Comparison: Animals are compared based on their performance records and genetic potential.

Types of Selection:
