What is State Creation?

state creation is the act of forming new administrative areas within a country. It involves dividing a larger area into smaller units, each with it’s own government and boundaries.

Reasons for State Creation

State creation is done for several reasons, all aimed at improving governance and development. The following are some reasons for state creation:

  1. Population Growth: When a country’s population grows vrey large, it can be hard for one government to manage everything. New states help spread out the work and resources.
  2. Geographical Size: Big countries often have different areas and people. New states make sure everyone gets help from the government.
  3. Cultural or Ethnic Diversity: Countries with many different groups of people might create new states to give those groups more power and a voice.
  4. Economic Growth: New states can help certain areas grow their economies by giving them more control and resources.
  5. Administrative Efficiency: Creating new states can streamline administrative processes, making it easier to deliver public services and manage local affairs.
  6. political Representation: New states ensure that different regions and communities have fair representation in the government, promoting inclusivity and participation.

State Creation in 1967

In 1967, Nigeria changed from having four big regions to twelve smaller states. This was a big change led by General Yakubu Gowon.

The Twelve States Created in 1967

In 1967, twelve states were created in nigeria to foster development and unity. Thes include:

  1. North-Western State (Later divided into states including Kano and Sokoto)
  2. North-Eastern State (Later divided into states including Borno and Adamawa)
  3. Kano State
  4. North-Central State (Later divided into states including Kaduna and Katsina)
  5. Benue-Plateau State (Later divided into states including Benue and Plateau)
  6. Kwara State
  7. western State (Later divided into Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, and Bendel states)
  8. Lagos State
  9. Mid-Western State (Later divided into Edo and Delta states)
  10. Rivers State
  11. South-Eastern State (Later divided into states including Cross River and Akwa Ibom)
