Note to Pupils:

Definition of State Creation:

State creation refers to the process of forming new administrative regions within a country, it involves the establishment of additional states with defined boundaries, each having its own government and leadership.

Four Reasons for State Creation

  1. Population Growth: When the population of an existing state becomes too large, leading to challenges in effective governance and resource distribution, a new state may be created to better manage the growing population.
  2. Geographical Size: If a state is exceptionally large in terms of land area, creating a new state can help in more efficient administration and service delivery to the people, as smaller units are often more manageable.
  3. Cultural or Ethnic Diversity: States with diverse cultural or ethnic groups may opt for creation to provide distinct administrative units that cater to the unique needs and aspirations of specific communities within the larger state.
  4. Economic Development: To stimulate economic growth and development in specific regions, new states may be created.

Number of States Created in 1967:
In 1967, Nigeria was reorganized into 12 states by General Yakubu Gowon. The establishment of these states marked a significant restructuring of the country’s administrative divisions.

The twelve states created in Nigeria in 1967 are:

  1. North-Western State (Later divided into states including Kano and Kaduna)
  2. North-Eastern State
  3. Kano State
  4. North-Central State
  5. Benue-Plateau State
  6. Kwara State
  7. Western State (Later divided into Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, and Bendel states)
  8. Lagos State
  9. Mid-Western State (Later divided into Edo and Delta states)
  10. Rivers State
  11. South-Eastern State (Later divided into states including Cross River and Akwa Ibom)
  12. East-Central State (Later divided into states including Anambra, Imo, and Enugu).

Evaluation:

  1. What is the meaning of state creation?
  2. Can you name a reason for creating new states?
  3. How many states were created in Nigeria in 1967?
  4. Name one state that was created in 1967.
