    Lesson Content

    What is Water?

Water is a clear liquid essential for all living things. It is made of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom (H₂O).

    Uses of Water

Water is essential for various activities in our daily lives. These include:

    1. Drinking: We drink water to stay hydrated.
    2. Cooking: Water is used in cooking many foods.
    3. Bathing: We use water to clean ourselves.
    4. Washing: We use water to wash clothes and dishes.
    5. Irrigation: Farmers use water to help plants grow.Plants need water to survive.
    6. Generating Electricity: Some power plants use water to make electricity.
    7. Cleaning: Water is used for cleaning homes, streets, and vehicles.
    8. Recreation: Water is used in swimming pools and water parks for recreational activities.

    Harmful Effects of Water

Unclean water can make us sick.

    Water-borne Diseases

Water-borne diseases are illnesses caused by drinking or using contaminated water. These include:

    1. Cholera: A serious illness causing diarrhea.
    2. Typhoid: A bacterial infection affecting the intestines.
    3. Dysentery: An intestinal infection causing diarrhea and stomach cramps.
    4. Hepatitis A: A viral infection affecting the liver.
    5. Polio: A viral disease that can cause paralysis.
    6. Bilharzia (Schistosomiasis): A disease caused by parasitic worms.
    Preventing Water-borne Diseases

Preventing water-borne diseases involves measures to ensure water is safe for use. These include:

    1. Boiling Water: Boiling water kills many harmful germs.
    2. Proper Sanitation: Good hygiene, like washing hands, helps prevent disease.
    3. Treating Water: Using water filters or tablets cleans water.
    4. Using Clean Containers: Storing water in clean, covered containers prevents contamination.
    5. Regular Water Testing: Testing water sources regularly helps identify and address contamination issues.
