Conversion of Number Bases

Conversion of Decimal to Binary

Decimal numbers are numbers in base 10. Binary numbers are in base 2 and use only digits 0 and 1. Converting decimal to binary involves repeated division by 2 and recording remainders.

The following are the steps for converting decimal to binary:

  1. Divide the decimal number by 2.
  2. Write down the remainder.
  3. Divide the quotient again by 2.
  4. Continue the process until the quotient becomes 0.
  5. Read the binary number by writing the remainders from bottom to top.
Conversion of Binary to Decimal

Binary to decimal conversion is done by multiplying each binary digit by powers of 2 according to its position and summing the results.

The following are the steps for converting binary to decimal:

  1. Write the binary number clearly.
  2. Assign powers of 2 to each digit starting from right (2⁰, 2¹, 2², etc).
  3. Multiply each binary digit (0 or 1) by its positional power of 2.
  4. Add all the results to get the decimal number.
Conversion of Decimal to Octal

Octal numbers are in base 8 and use digits from 0 to 7. Decimal to octal conversion is similar to decimal to binary but division is done by 8.

The following are the steps for converting decimal to octal:

  1. Divide the decimal number by 8.
  2. Write down the remainder.
  3. Divide the quotient again by 8.
  4. Continue until the quotient becomes 0.
