Tree Growth Process
Tree growth is a continuous process where trees increase in size both in height (vertically) and in girth (horizontally). This growth occurs mainly through cell division and expansion in specific areas.
The main types of growth in trees are:
- Primary Growth: This is growth in length and occurs at the tips of roots and shoots (apical meristems).
- Secondary Growth: This is growth in thickness or girth, occurring in the stem and roots through the activity of the vascular cambium and cork cambium. The vascular cambium produces new xylem (wood) and phloem (bark).
Structure of a Tree
A tree is composed of several parts, each with a specific function. A cross-section of a tree trunk reveals the following layers from the outside inwards:
- Bark: The outermost protective layer of the tree, consisting of outer bark (dead cells) and inner bark (phloem, which transports food from leaves to roots).
- Cambium Layer: A thin layer of living cells located between the bark and the sapwood. It is responsible for the secondary growth, producing new wood cells (xylem) towards the inside and new bark cells (phloem) towards the outside.
- Sapwood (Xylem): The younger, outer layers of wood that are still actively involved in transporting water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves. It is generally lighter in colour and contains more moisture.
- Heartwood (Xylem): The older, inner layers of wood that are no longer active in water transport. It is often darker, denser, and more durable due to the accumulation of extractives like gums and resins, making it resistant to decay and insects.
- Pith: The small, central core of the tree trunk, consisting of soft, spongy tissue. It is the remnant of the primary growth and is usually inactive in mature trees.
- Annual Rings: Concentric rings visible in a cross-section of the trunk, representing one year’s growth. They are formed by seasonal variations in cambial activity (lighter, larger cells in spring/summer, darker, smaller cells in autumn/winter). They indicate the age of the tree.
Timber Growth Regions in West Africa
West Africa is home to significant forest reserves that provide various types of timber. Major timber growth regions are found in countries with dense tropical rainforests.
Some prominent timber-producing countries in West Africa include:
- Nigeria: Known for species like Iroko, Mahogany, Sapele.
