Students of Government Day Secondary School, Karu have emerged winners of the Abuja Season 3 grand finale of the “I Beg to Differ” debate competition, securing a cash prize of ₦3 million.

The competition, organised by Nigeria Info FM Abuja and sponsored by KIRA Ai, brought together leading secondary schools across the Federal Capital Territory. The event focused on promoting critical thinking, public speaking, and civic engagement among students.

Speaking at the event, Programme Manager Swat Duniah-Adalumo described the competition as both impactful and innovative. She explained that this season introduced a school-based format, allowing institutions—not just individuals—to actively participate and compete.

According to her, the new format strengthened teamwork and encouraged deeper involvement from schools. She added that the organisers remain committed to nurturing intellectually sound students who can contribute meaningfully to society.

Also speaking, Obiechina Emmanuel, Chief Executive Officer of KIRA, said the organisation supported the initiative to inspire young Nigerians to engage in debating and pursue STEM-related opportunities. He noted that all participants performed impressively and emphasized that the goal of sponsorship extended beyond brand visibility to youth development.

Reacting to their victory, student representative Majesty Joseph expressed gratitude to the organisers, stating that the win resulted from intensive preparation and teamwork. He added that the team is now looking forward to competing at the Lagos stage, with hopes of achieving another victory.

In the final standings, Fountain School, Jikwoyi secured second place, winning ₦2 million, while Government Science Secondary School, Maitama finished third with a prize of ₦1 million.

The “I Beg to Differ” debate initiative continues to serve as a major youth-focused programme aimed at developing communication skills, critical thinking, and civic awareness among secondary school students across Nigeria.
