Beautiful Beginning Academy Wins NUJ-FCT 2026 Media Literacy Quiz

Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council has organised a media literacy and journalism quiz competition for secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory as part of efforts to strengthen press clubs in schools and encourage students’ interest in journalism.

The competition, held on Thursday in Abuja, featured students from different secondary schools across the FCT competing in rounds focused on media literacy, communication, and journalism knowledge.

Beautiful Beginning Academy, Abuja, emerged as the overall winner after defeating Cedar Hall Academy, Lugbe, in a tense tie-breaker round. Both schools had earlier finished with 205 points each after the second round of the contest. The final tie-breaker ended 8–6 in favour of Beautiful Beginning Academy.

In the first round of the competition, Government Senior Secondary School (GSS) Garki scored 70 points, while GSS Gwarimpa secured 80 points. Cedar Hall Academy recorded 95 points, while Beautiful Beginning Academy led the round with 115 points.

At the end of the second round, GSS Garki finished with 40 points, GSS Gwarimpa scored 80 points, Cedar Hall Academy earned 110 points, and Beautiful Beginning Academy secured 90 points, resulting in a tie between the top two schools.

Speaking during the event, the Chairman of the NUJ-FCT Council, Grace Ike, explained that the quiz competition was organised to revive press clubs in schools and help students better understand the role of the media in society.

She encouraged teachers to actively organise press club activities in their schools and partner with the union to create more opportunities for students interested in journalism and communication.

According to her, the initiative will help improve media literacy, mentorship, leadership development, and community engagement among secondary school students in the FCT.

Also speaking at the event, the Vice Chairman of the NUJ and Coordinator of Press Clubs, Yahaya Ndambabo, said the programme reflects the council’s commitment to promoting journalism, responsible communication, and intellectual development among young people.

He noted that press clubs provide students with opportunities to build confidence, critical thinking abilities, leadership qualities, and public speaking skills while also nurturing future journalists and media professionals.

Representatives of the Secondary Education Board, teachers, and other education stakeholders attended the event. Students who participated described the competition as an exciting and educational experience, noting that it was the first programme of its kind they had witnessed.

The event concluded with the presentation of awards and cash prizes to the winning schools by the NUJ-FCT Council leadership.
