Information about Parents, Guardians and Teachers

Parents are the mother and father who take care of you at home. They love you, feed you, clothe you, and send you to school. Some children live with a Guardian, who is an adult that takes care of them like a parent.

Lesson Keywords

  • Parents – Your mother and father.
  • Guardian – An adult who cares for a child.
  • Teacher – The person who teaches you at school.
  • Mother – Female parent.
  • Father – Male parent.

Differentiation

  • Support: For pupils who are shy or struggle to recall names, the teacher can use picture cards of a generic “Mummy” and “Daddy” and point to herself for “Teacher.” The teacher can also provide the first sound of a name or ask a peer to help.
  • Extension: For pupils who quickly recall the names, the teacher can ask them to share one thing their mother, father, or teacher does for them, or ask if they have a grandparent’s name they know.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Prepare the instructional materials, especially the posters and any video clips, before the lesson begins. Ensure you have clear pictures of a mother, father, and a teacher. When asking for names, be sensitive to pupils who may not live with both parents or whose guardians’ names might be different. Emphasize the *role* of the caregiver. Encourage all pupils to participate, but do not force shy children to speak if they are uncomfortable; instead, allow them to point or whisper. The main idea children must understand is that these adults care for them and it’s important to know their names. Observable actions showing understanding include pointing to the correct person/picture and verbally stating the names correctly. Repeat the song and questions frequently throughout the week to reinforce learning.
