Lesson Content/Board Summary
Geometrical Progression (G.P)
Meaning of Geometrical Progression (G.P)
A geometrical progression (G.P) is a sequence of numbers where each term after the first is found by multiplying the previous one by a fixed, non-zero number called the common ratio (r).
Example: 2, 4, 8, 16, … (common ratio r = 2)
The first term is denoted by ‘a’.
The nth Term of a G.P
The formula for the nth term (Tn) of a G.P is given by:
Tn = ar(n-1)
Where:
- a = the first term
- r = the common ratio
- n = the term number
Example 1: Find the 5th term of the G.P: 3, 6, 12, …
Step 1: Identify ‘a’ and ‘r’.
a = 3
r = 6/3 = 2
Step 2: State the formula for the nth term.
Tn = ar(n-1)
Step 3: Substitute the values for n=5.
T5 = 3 * 2(5-1)
T5 = 3 * 24
T5 = 3 * 16
T5 = 48
Geometric Mean
The geometric mean (GM) of two numbers ‘x’ and ‘y’ is given by:
GM = √(xy)
If a, GM, b are in G.P, then GM/a = b/GM, which implies GM2 = ab, so GM = √(ab).
Example 2: Find the geometric mean between 4 and 16.
Step 1: Identify ‘x’ and ‘y’.
x = 4
y = 16
Step 2: State the formula for geometric mean.
GM = √(xy)
Step 3: Substitute the values.
GM = √(4 * 16)
GM = √64
GM = 8
Sum of n Terms of a G.P
The sum of the first n terms (Sn) of a G.P is given by two formulas:
1. If r > 1:
Sn = a(rn – 1) / (r – 1)
2. If r < 1:
Sn = a(1 – rn) / (1 – r)
Example 3: Find the sum of the first 4 terms of the G.P: 2, 6, 18, …
Step 1: Identify ‘a’, ‘r’, and ‘n’.
a = 2
r = 6/2 = 3
n = 4
Step 2: Choose the appropriate formula (r = 3 > 1).
Sn = a(rn – 1) / (r – 1)
Step 3: Substitute the values.
S4 = 2(34 – 1) / (3 – 1)
S4 = 2(81 – 1) / 2
S4 = 2(80) / 2
S4 = 80
Sum to Infinity of a G.P
The sum to infinity (S∞) of a G.P exists only if the absolute value of the common ratio is less than 1 (i.e., |r| < 1 or -1 < r < 1).
The formula for the sum to infinity is:
S∞ = a / (1 – r)
Example 4: Find the sum to infinity of the G.P: 8, 4, 2, …
Step 1: Identify ‘a’ and ‘r’.
a = 8
r = 4/8 = 1/2
Step 2: Check the condition for sum to infinity (|r| < 1).
|1/2| < 1, so the sum to infinity exists.
Step 3: State the formula.
S∞ = a / (1 – r)
Step 4: Substitute the values.
S∞ = 8 / (1 – 1/2)
S∞ = 8 / (1/2)
S∞ = 8 * 2
S∞ = 16
