Reference Materials

The following resources was used in planning this lesson:

Instructional Materials

The teacher will teach this lesson with the aid of:

  • Computer system or laptop
  • Projector or large display screen
  • Sample data sheet showing student names, subjects, and scores
  • Diagram charts of flat file, hierarchical, and relational databases
  • Whiteboard and marker

Rationale for the Lesson

Understanding forms of databases helps students know how data is stored, related, and retrieved efficiently. It builds their capacity to organize information digitally.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils are already familiar with data, information, and basic computer applications such as Microsoft Excel or simple data entry tasks.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

Forms of Database

Flat File Database

A flat file database stores data in a single table, often in plain text or spreadsheet form. Each record is listed one after another without complex relationships.

The following are features of a flat file database:

  1. It stores all data in one table.
  2. Each row represents a record, and each column represents a field.
  3. It is easy to design and maintain for small data sets.
  4. It becomes difficult to manage as the data grows.
  5. Examples include simple CSV files and Excel spreadsheets.
Hierarchical Database

A hierarchical database organizes data in a tree-like structure where one record acts as the “parent,” and others are “children.” Each child has only one parent, but a parent can have multiple children.

The following are features of a hierarchical database:

  1. Data is arranged in parent-child relationships.
  2. It is suitable for representing structured relationships, such as organization charts.
  3. It allows fast access to large amounts of data.
  4. It is difficult to modify relationships once the structure is created.
  5. Examples include IBM Information Management System (IMS).
Relational Database

A relational database organizes data into multiple tables connected by relationships using keys (primary and foreign keys). It is the most common type used in modern computing.

The following are features of a relational database:

  1. Data is stored in different tables linked by relationships.
  2. Each table has a unique key that connects it to others.
  3. It prevents data duplication and ensures accuracy.
  4. It allows easy updating, searching, and reporting.
  5. Examples include MySQL, Microsoft Access, and Oracle Database.
Preparation of a Result Sheet Using a Database

Databases can be used to prepare result sheets by storing and calculating students’ scores automatically. Fields such as student name, subject, test score, exam score, and total score are entered and organized for easy retrieval.

The following are steps for preparing a result sheet using a database:

  1. Create a table with fields like Name, Subject, Test Score, Exam Score, and Total.
  2. Enter the data of all students correctly.
  3. Use database functions or queries to calculate totals and averages.
  4. Generate and print reports or result sheets automatically.
  5. Save and back up the data to avoid loss.

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques:

Lecture, Discussion, Demonstration, Explanation, Group Work, Practical Illustration, Question and Answer

Instructional Procedures

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher begins by asking pupils how schools store students’ results and explains that databases help store such records efficiently.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond and give examples of data storage systems they know.
Learning Point: Pupils become curious about how databases help organize and manage data.

Step 2: Flat File Database

Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher defines and explains a flat file database using a chart or sample Excel sheet.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe, take notes, and give examples of flat file systems.
Learning Point: Pupils understand how a flat file database works.

Step 3: Hierarchical Database

Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Discussion
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher explains hierarchical database with a diagram showing parent-child data relationships.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils study the diagram and describe the relationship structure.
Learning Point: Pupils learn how data is arranged in a tree-like pattern.

Step 4: Relational Database and Preparation of Result Sheet

Time: 12 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher demonstrates relational database using tables connected with primary and foreign keys, then shows how to prepare a result sheet using a database.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils follow the demonstration, ask questions, and attempt creating a sample table.
Learning Point: Pupils can relate database structure to real-life applications like result management.

Step 5: Note-Taking

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Reinforcement
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher writes the board summary and instructs pupils to copy it.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the notes.
Learning Point: Pupils have a clear written summary of the lesson.

Step 6: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. What is a flat file database?
  2. List two features of a hierarchical database.
  3. What is the major advantage of a relational database?
  4. Mention two steps in preparing a result sheet using a database.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer the questions orally.
Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson objectives.

Step 7: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Reinforcement
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher summarizes the lesson, emphasizing the importance of databases in organizing information and automating tasks.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen attentively and ask final questions.
Learning Point: Pupils understand the relevance of databases in daily digital operations.

Lesson Keywords

  • Database – an organized collection of related data
  • Flat file – a single table storing all data in one place
  • Hierarchical – database with parent-child structure
  • Relational – database with interconnected tables
  • Field – a column that holds a specific category of data

Differentiation

Provide extra time and visual aids for slower learners. Assign advanced pupils to assist in creating database examples during practical demonstration.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Ensure the practical demonstration is clear and simple. Relate examples to real-life applications like school result sheets, staff records, or library systems. Encourage pupils to practice using spreadsheet tools at home.
