EcoSmart Launches Climate Action Training for Nigerian Students

EcoSmart Club has introduced a new initiative aimed at empowering secondary school students to take active roles in addressing environmental challenges within their communities.

The programme, launched in celebration of World Environment Day, will encourage students to participate in practical eco-friendly activities such as recycling, waste management, sustainability advocacy, and other climate-focused projects.

According to the organisation, students from secondary schools across Nigeria will take part in hands-on environmental activities during the upcoming National School Climate Action Week scheduled to hold from June 1 to June 6, 2026.

Founder of EcoSmart Club, Hannah Omokhaye, explained that the initiative was designed to move beyond awareness campaigns by encouraging students to engage in meaningful climate action. She noted that the programme aims to raise environmentally conscious young people who can become responsible future leaders.

Participating schools are expected to carry out environmentally friendly projects within their local communities while documenting their activities through photographs and short video clips. The organisation stated that selected entries would be highlighted in daily “School Spotlights” to showcase innovative student-led solutions to environmental issues.

Project Manager Temidayo Arewa said the initiative specifically targets secondary school students because they are at a stage where values and lifelong habits can still be shaped effectively. According to him, exposing students to climate action early can have long-term positive effects on environmental sustainability in Nigeria.

EcoSmart Club also revealed that storytelling would play a major role in the campaign, with students’ experiences and environmental projects shared online to inspire similar efforts in schools and communities nationwide.

At the end of the programme, the organisation plans to publish a report highlighting participation statistics, major achievements, and key lessons learned from the initiative.

Participating schools will receive certificates of participation, while some outstanding projects may continue to receive visibility and recognition through follow-up features and impact tracking.

The organisation has encouraged interested secondary schools across the country to register through its online platform and become part of the growing movement for environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
