Topic: Using our Five Senses
Content/Learning Area: What are our five senses?, Sense Organs
Time Allocation: 40 minutes
Performance Objectives
by the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Cognitive Domain:
- Identify the five sense organs. 2.State the function of each sense organ.
- Affective Domain:
- Show recognition for the importance of the five senses.
- Psychomotor Domain:
- Demonstrate the use of each sense organ through activities.
- Social Domain:
1. Work cooperatively with peers during activities. - 9 – Years Basic Education Curriculum

- Online Details
- Relevant Textbooks
- Whiteboard or chart
- Markers or chalk
- Pictures of sense organs
- Objects with different textures, smells, and tastes (optional)
- Eyes: Our eyes help us see. They detect light and send signals to our brain, showing us colors, shapes, and movement.
- Skin: Our skin is our biggest sense organ. It feels pressure, temperature, and pain, letting us know textures, warmth, and cold.
- Ears: Our ears help us hear sounds. they collect sound waves and send them to our brain, so we can hear different sounds.
- Nose: Our nose helps us smell. It has special parts that detect different scents, like flowers or food.
- Tongue: Our tongue helps us taste. It has taste buds that detect sweetness, sourness, saltiness, bitterness, and umami.
- Senses – Ways we perceive the world around us.
- Sight – The ability to see using our eyes.
- Touch – The ability to feel using our skin.
- Hearing – the ability to hear sounds using our ears.
- Smell – The ability to detect scents using our nose.
- Taste – The ability to identify flavors using our tongue.
- Sense Organs – Body parts that help us perceive the world.
- What are the five senses?
- Which sense organ helps us see?
- How does our skin help us explore the world?
- What is the function of our ears?
- What are the different tastes we can identify with our tongue?
- Draw and label the five sense organs.
- List three things you can do with each sense.
- Write a short paragraph about yoru favorite sense and why you like it.
- for slower learners: Provide one-on-one assistance and use simpler language.
- For advanced learners: Encourage them to research further about the senses and present their findings to the class.
- For visual/auditory/kinesthetic learners: Use visual aids, auditory cues, and hands-on activities to cater to different learning styles.

Rationale for the Lesson
Understanding our five senses is essential to learning about the world around us. This lesson provides a foundation for future science lessons and helps pupils appreciate the importance of their senses in daily life.
Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
The teacher will begin by asking pupils what they did over the weekend, encouraging them to describe their experiences using their senses. This will lead into a discussion about how we use our senses to explore the world.
Lesson Content
What are our five senses?
We have five senses that help us explore the world: sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste. Each sense uses a special body part.
Sense Organs
Sense organs are specialized body parts that enable us to perceive the world around us.
The following are the five sense organs:
Teaching Methods
To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following methods: Discussion, Question and answer, Exhibition.
Instructional Procedures
To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:
Step 1: Introduction (Set Induction)
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: Ask pupils to share their weekend experiences, focusing on how they used their senses.
Pupils’ Activity: share their experiences and identify the senses used.
Step 2: Description of Key Concepts
time: 10 minutes
teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: Introduce the five senses (sight, touch, hearing, smell, taste) and their corresponding organs.
Pupils’ Activity: Listen attentively and participate in discussions.
Step 3: Demonstration/Guided Practise
Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: Show pictures of sense organs and explain their functions. Use objects to demonstrate how each sense works.
Pupils’ Activity: observe the demonstration and participate in activities.
Step 4: Autonomous Practice
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided practice
Teacher’s Activity: Ask pupils to identify the sense organ used in various scenarios.
Pupils’ Activity: Answer questions and participate in class discussions.
Step 5: Note-Taking
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Note-Taking
Teacher’s activity: Guide pupils in taking notes on the key concepts.Pupils’ Activity: Write down key points and definitions.
Step 6: Evaluation/Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: Ask evaluation questions to assess understanding.
Pupils’ Activity: Answer the evaluation questions.
Step 7: Conclusion
Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarizing
Teacher’s Activity: Summarize the key concepts and encourage pupils to continue exploring the world using their five senses. Assign a short, fun activity related to the senses for homework.
