Instructional Materials

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will use the following materials:

  • Well-labelled diagram of the human body
  • Flashcards showing the sense organs
  • A small mirror for pupils to observe themselves
  • A catchy sense organs rhyme

Rationale for the Lesson

Understanding our sense organs is crucial for young children. It helps them understand how their bodies work and how they interact with their habitat. This knowledge promotes safety and healthy habits.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

The teacher will begin by asking pupils to name different body parts they know. This will lead into a discussion about how we use our bodies to experience the world around us, setting the stage for learning about sense organs.

Lesson Content

Identification of Sense Organs of the Body

The following are the sense organs of the body:

  1. Eyes
  2. Ears
  3. Nose

Teaching Methods

To deliver this lesson,‌ ⁤the teacher will⁤ adopt⁤ the following methods: Set induction, Discussion, exhibition, group discussion, Singing and Recitation, Direct instruction, Questioning and feedback.

Instructional Procedures

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Set induction
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher asks pupils about different parts of their body and how they use them daily.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond by mentioning parts like eyes, ears, nose, etc.
Learning Point: The human body has many parts.

Step 2: Clarification of Sense Organs

Time: 7 mins
Teaching Skill: Discussion
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher shows a labelled diagram and identifies the five sense organs.
Pupils’ activity: pupils observe and listen to the explanation.
Learning Point: Eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin are sense organs.

Step 3: Touching the Sense Organs

Time: 6 mins
Teaching Skill: exhibition
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher touches their own sense organs and asks pupils to do the same.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils touch their eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin.
Learning Point: The five sense organs and their locations.

Step 4: Uses of Sense Organs

Time: 6 mins
Teaching Skill: Group discussion
teacher’s activity: Teacher explains how each sense organ works and asks questions about their uses.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer questions based on their senses.
Learning Point: Eyes for seeing, ears for hearing, nose for smelling, tongue for tasting, skin for feeling.

Step 5: Sense Organs Rhyme

time: 8 mins
Teaching Skill: Singing and Recitation
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher teaches pupils a catchy rhyme on sense organs and sings along with them.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils sing the rhyme together.
Learning Point: The sense organs help us experience the world.

Step 6: Note-Taking & Conclusion

Time: 3 mins
Teaching Skill: Direct instruction
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher guides pupils to copy a short note on sense organs.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the note into their books.
Learning Point: Summary of the sense organs and their uses.

Step 7: Evaluation

Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Questioning and feedback
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher asks questions about the sense organs and their uses.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer the questions orally.
Learning Point: sense organs and their importance.

Lesson Keywords

  • Sense Organs – Special parts of the body that help us experience the world.
  • Eyes – Organs for seeing.
  • Ears – Organs for hearing.
  • Nose – Organ for smelling.
  • Tongue – Organ for tasting.
  • Skin – Organ for feeling and touching.

Lesson Evaluation

To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:

  1. Name the five sense organs.
  2. What do we use our eyes for?
  3. What do we use our ears for?
  4. What do we use our nose for?
  5. What do we use our tongue for?
  6. What do we use our skin for?

Assignment/Homework

  1. Draw and label the five sense organs.
  2. List three things you can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel.

Differentiation

  • For slower learners: Provide picture cards of the sense organs and help them match the cards to the correct body parts.
  • For advanced learners: Ask them to describe how each sense organ helps them in different situations (e.g., how their eyes help them read a book, how their ears help them listen to music).
  • For visual/auditory/kinesthetic learners: Use visual aids like diagrams and flashcards, incorporate songs and rhymes, and allow them to touch and feel objects to understand the sense of touch.

Note for Teachers

Ensure to use real-life examples and interactive activities to make the lesson engaging. Encourage pupils to share their experiences related to each sense organ.
