British International School Lagos recently hosted its annual Inter-School Chess Championship, bringing together dozens of schools from across Lagos for a day of intellectual competition and strategic gameplay.

The event, held on March 7, 2026, at the school’s Victoria Island campus, attracted 28 primary schools and 18 secondary schools, making it one of the most anticipated chess competitions in the Lagos school calendar.

Among the participants was Ruthphidale School, which made its first appearance at the prestigious tournament by competing in the primary school category. Despite being newcomers to the competition, the team delivered an impressive performance, finishing 13th out of 28 participating schools.

Strong Debut Performance

The primary school category featured intense competition, with each school presenting a team of four players. Participants competed in a six-round Swiss system format, a structure designed to match players against opponents with similar performance levels throughout the tournament.

For Ruthphidale School, the championship was both a learning experience and a test of resilience. Competing against schools with long-standing chess traditions, the team displayed notable composure, strategic thinking, and teamwork throughout the rounds.

Learning from a Competitive Fifth Round

One of Ruthphidale School’s most challenging moments came during the fifth round, when the team faced Reading Rainbow Preparatory, Nursery and Primary School.

According to the official tournament record, Michael Johnson faced Eriola Taiwo on board one, with Eriola Taiwo winning the game. Although the result did not go Ruthphidale’s way, the round provided valuable competitive experience and showed the standard of play at the tournament.

The encounter became an important learning moment for the Ruthphidale team, reinforcing the need for focus, preparation, and resilience against experienced opponents.

Strong Finish in the Final Round

Entering the final round, the Ruthphidale team played with renewed confidence and determination. Their efforts paid off with a decisive 4–0 victory over Great Bloomers School, ending their debut campaign on a high note and helping secure their 13th-place finish.

Building a Foundation for Future Competitions

The 2026 BIS Inter-School Chess Championship served as an important platform for promoting critical thinking, concentration, and healthy academic competition among students.

For Ruthphidale School, the event marked a historic first appearance and a promising step into competitive school chess in Lagos. Finishing 13th out of 28 participating primary schools and recording key victories demonstrated the team’s potential for future tournaments.

The Ruthphidale team featured Oni Olakunmi, Folarin Gbolahun, Ani Chibuke, and Michael Johnson, whose performances helped lay a strong foundation for the school’s growing chess programme.

With the experience gained from this debut outing, the school is expected to build on its momentum and return even stronger in future editions of the competition.
