Reference Materials

The following resources were used in planning this lesson:

  • 9 Years Basic Education Curriculum for Senior Secondary Schools.
  • State Unified Scheme of Work for Photography (SS1).
  • Anyanwu, C. N. (2018). Comprehensive Photography for Senior Secondary Schools 1. Ibadan: University Press PLC.
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_j5Tq8uR70

Instructional Materials

The teacher will teach this lesson with the aid of:

  • An actual camera body (DSLR or mirrorless).
  • A camera lens.
  • A lens cap.
  • A cleaning cloth.
  • A camera bag.
  • Charts showing diagrams of camera parts.

Rationale for the Lesson

This lesson helps pupils understand the fundamental tool of photography, the camera. Knowing its basic parts, their functions, and how to care for it enables pupils to use the camera effectively and maintain its condition for future use in practical photography.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils are assumed to have seen cameras before and have a general idea that cameras are used to take pictures.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

THE CAMERA

Definition of a Camera

A camera is an optical instrument used to capture images, either singly or in sequence. These images can be stored internally or externally, and can be either still photographs or moving videos.

Basic Camera Parts

The following are common basic parts of a camera:

  • Camera Body: The main part of the camera that houses all internal components.
  • Lens: An optical device that gathers light from a scene and focuses it onto the camera’s sensor.
  • Shutter: A mechanism that opens and closes to control the duration for which light hits the sensor.
  • Aperture: An opening within the lens that controls the amount of light entering the camera.
  • Viewfinder: A small window or screen used to compose and preview the image before taking a shot.
  • Sensor/Film: The component that captures the light and converts it into an image (digital sensor) or records it chemically (film).
  • Flash: A built-in or external light source used to illuminate subjects in low-light conditions.
  • LCD Screen: A display screen on the back of the camera for reviewing photos, navigating menus, and live view.

Functions of Camera Parts

Each part of the camera plays a specific role in capturing an image:

  • The Camera Body provides the structural framework and protects the delicate internal components.
  • The Lens focuses light from the scene onto the image sensor, determining the field of view and sharpness.
  • The Shutter controls the exposure time, allowing light to hit the sensor for a specific duration.
  • The Aperture regulates the amount of light entering the lens, affecting brightness and depth of field.
  • The Viewfinder allows the photographer to accurately frame the shot.
  • The Sensor/Film records the visual information, converting light into a digital image or latent chemical image.
  • The Flash provides supplementary light for subjects in dim environments.
  • The LCD Screen enables immediate review of captured images and access to camera settings.

Care of the Camera

Proper care is essential to maintain the functionality and longevity of a camera. The following are ways to care for a camera:

  • Use a Camera Bag: Always store the camera in a padded bag to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical impact.
  • Clean Regularly: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe the camera body. Use a lens brush or blower to remove dust from the lens, and a special lens cleaning solution and cloth for smudges.
  • Protect the Lens: Always keep a lens cap on when not in use to prevent scratches and dust.
  • Avoid Extreme Conditions: Do not expose the camera to excessive heat, cold, dust, or moisture.
  • Handle with Care: Hold the camera firmly and avoid dropping it.
  • Battery Care: Use original batteries and chargers. Remove batteries if the camera will not be used for a long period.
  • Sensor Cleaning: Only perform sensor cleaning if properly trained, or have it done by a professional.

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Discussion, Lecture, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Visual Aids

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and introduces the topic by asking pupils if they have ever seen a camera or taken a picture. The teacher then displays an actual camera and asks pupils what they think it is used for.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to the questions and identify the camera.
Learning Point: Pupils are introduced to the camera and its basic purpose.

Step 2: Basic Camera Parts

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Identification
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher displays a camera (or a diagram) and points out the basic parts, naming each one. The teacher writes the names of the parts on the board.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the camera, listen attentively, and repeat the names of the parts as called out by the teacher. They copy the names from the board.
Learning Point: Pupils identify and name the basic parts of a camera.

Step 3: Functions of Camera Parts

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains the function of each camera part identified in Step 2, demonstrating how some parts (like the lens, shutter, aperture ring if applicable) work on the actual camera. The teacher emphasizes the importance of each part.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the explanations, ask questions for clarification, and observe the demonstrations.
Learning Point: Pupils understand the role and function of each camera part.

Step 4: Care of the Camera

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Instruction/Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains the importance of camera care and demonstrates simple cleaning techniques using a cleaning cloth and lens cap. The teacher lists and explains various ways to care for a camera.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils pay attention, take notes, and observe the demonstration of camera care.
Learning Point: Pupils learn how to properly care for a camera.

Step 5: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. Define a camera.
  2. Mention three basic parts of a camera.
  3. State the function of the camera lens.
  4. List two ways to care for a camera.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 6: Conclusion

Time: 3 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarization/Recap
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarizes the key points of the lesson, reinforcing the definition of a camera, its main parts and their functions, and the importance of camera care. The teacher gives a brief assignment.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the summary and note down the assignment.
Learning Point: Pupils consolidate their understanding of the lesson.

Lesson Keywords

  • Camera – An optical instrument used to capture images.
  • Lens – The part of the camera that focuses light onto the sensor.
  • Shutter – The mechanism that controls the duration of light exposure to the sensor.
  • Aperture – The opening in the lens that controls the amount of light entering the camera.
  • Viewfinder – A device used to frame and compose a shot.

Differentiation

For visual learners, the teacher will use actual cameras and detailed diagrams. Kinesthetic learners will benefit from hands-on practice in identifying parts and demonstrating care. For pupils who grasp concepts quickly, they can be encouraged to research different types of cameras. Pupils needing more support will receive additional guidance and simplified explanations from the teacher and peer mentors.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Ensure an actual camera is available for demonstration. Encourage pupils to actively participate in identifying parts and discussing their functions. Emphasize practical demonstrations for camera care to make the lesson more engaging and memorable for the pupils.
