The Lagos State Government has announced a significant improvement in mathematics performance among students in public schools, attributing the achievement to sustained investment in education, strategic partnerships, and initiatives that encourage academic excellence.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Ali-Balogun, made this known during the Darsel State Award Mathematics Competition held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium.
The Commissioner was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite.
Speaking at the competition, Ali-Balogun revealed that a comparison of students’ mathematics results between 2024 and 2025 showed remarkable progress, demonstrating that the state’s educational interventions are producing positive outcomes.
According to him, recognising and rewarding academic excellence has motivated students to perform better, particularly in mathematics.
“Rewarding academic excellence is already paying off, with a clear difference in students’ mathematics performance. I can assure you that mathematics education in Lagos will continue to improve,” he said.
The Commissioner also reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to providing quality education and collaborating with reputable organisations that can contribute meaningfully to teaching and learning. He explained that every partnership proposal is carefully evaluated based on its value and measurable impact on students.
He encouraged students to remain focused on their studies despite challenges and expressed appreciation to teachers for their continued dedication to improving learning outcomes.
A major highlight of the event was the recognition of the Darsel Mathematics App, a digital learning platform developed to improve mathematics education across Lagos’ six education districts. The application is designed to help students bridge learning gaps through interactive practice and continuous assessment.
Students in the Junior Secondary School Three (JSS3) category who demonstrated outstanding performance and actively used the application received awards for their achievements.
Also speaking at the event, Tolu Alalade, Chief Executive Officer of Sapphire Exploit 21st Century Skills, said the digital platform has significantly transformed mathematics learning in Lagos public schools.
According to him, students successfully answered approximately 8.7 million mathematics questions correctly during the current academic session, describing the achievement as a major milestone in improving learning outcomes.
He added that mathematics education equips learners with critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills that are valuable both inside and outside the classroom.
The Lagos State Government says it will continue investing in innovative educational programmes and digital learning solutions to further strengthen mathematics education and improve students’ academic performance across public schools.
