Lesson Content/Board Summary

INTERNET

Internet Services

Internet services are the various applications and facilities available to users through the Internet. These services enable communication, information sharing, and various online activities.

The following are common Internet services:

  • Email (Electronic Mail)

Email is a system for exchanging digital messages over the Internet. It allows users to send and receive messages, including text, images, and other attachments, to one or more recipients anywhere in the world.

  • WWW (World Wide Web)

The World Wide Web, commonly known as the Web, is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a web browser, users can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia, and navigate between them using hyperlinks.

  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

FTP is a standard network protocol used for transferring computer files from a server to a client or vice versa over a computer network. It is commonly used for uploading and downloading files, such as web pages, documents, and software, between computers.

  • Discussion Group / Forum

A discussion group or online forum is a platform where people can communicate with each other by posting messages and replying to them. These groups are usually organized around specific topics of interest, allowing members to share information, ask questions, and engage in conversations.

  • Telnet (Telecommunication Network)

Telnet is a network protocol used to provide a text-based command-line interface to a remote computer. It allows users to connect to a remote server and execute commands as if they were directly operating the remote machine.

  • Usenet (User Network)

Usenet is a worldwide distributed discussion system. It consists of a collection of network newsgroups, where users can read and post public messages. It predates the World Wide Web and is used for sharing information and discussions on various topics.

  • Instant Messaging (IM)

Instant Messaging allows real-time text-based communication between two or more people over the Internet. Users can send and receive messages instantly, often including features like voice and video calls.

  • Video Conferencing

Video conferencing enables two or more people at different locations to communicate in real-time using video and audio transmissions. It facilitates virtual meetings, online classes, and remote collaboration.
