A teacher who was declared wanted by the police over the alleged death of a 12-year-old student in Anambra State has surrendered herself to law enforcement authorities.

The 47-year-old teacher, identified as Dim Ebere, reportedly turned herself in at a police station following an intensive search by security operatives.

According to the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect voluntarily reported to the Neni Police Station after sustained efforts by the Command to locate her.

The police had earlier launched a manhunt for the teacher after she allegedly went into hiding following the reported death of a 12-year-old student in Adazi-Ani, located in Anaocha Local Government Area. Members of the public were also urged to provide useful information that could assist in locating the suspect.

Police authorities confirmed that Mrs. Ebere is now in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for the completion of investigations into the incident.

The Police Command stated that officers from its Safe School Protection Squad worked alongside personnel from the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, community leaders, and other stakeholders during the operation that led to the suspect’s surrender.

The outcome of the investigation will determine any further legal action in accordance with Nigerian law.

The tragic incident has generated widespread concern among parents, educators, and child rights advocates, with many calling for greater emphasis on positive discipline, child protection policies, and the elimination of corporal punishment that could endanger the lives of learners.
