Lesson Content/Board Summary
DISABILITY AND REHABILITATION
Meaning of Disability
Disability refers to any condition of the body or mind that makes it more difficult for the person to do certain activities and interact with the world around them. It can affect a person’s physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental functions.
Prevention of Disability
Disability can be prevented through various measures, including:
- Immunization: Vaccinating against diseases like polio and measles that can cause disability.
- Good Nutrition: Ensuring adequate intake of essential nutrients to prevent deficiencies that lead to conditions like blindness or stunted growth.
- Safety Measures: Practising road safety, occupational safety, and home safety to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Early Detection and Intervention: Identifying health conditions early and providing timely treatment to prevent progression to disability.
- Maternal and Child Health: Providing proper antenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal care to prevent birth defects and childhood disabilities.
Types of Disability
Disabilities can be classified into primary, secondary, and tertiary based on their origin and progression:
Primary Disability
This is the initial or main disability resulting directly from a disease, injury, or congenital condition. It is the direct impairment of a body function or structure.
- Examples: Paralysis from a spinal cord injury, blindness from birth, loss of a limb due to an accident.
Secondary Disability
This refers to additional health problems or impairments that arise as a consequence of the primary disability. These often develop over time due to inactivity, complications, or inadequate care related to the primary condition.
- Examples: Pressure sores in a person with paralysis, muscle atrophy due to prolonged immobility, depression resulting from chronic illness.
Tertiary Disability
This refers to the social, psychological, and economic limitations or disadvantages experienced by an individual due to their primary and secondary disabilities. It relates to the impact of the disability on a person’s participation in society.
- Examples: Unemployment due to discrimination, social isolation, difficulty accessing public facilities, low self-esteem.
Meaning of Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is a set of interventions designed to optimize functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions in interaction with their environment. It aims to help individuals achieve and maintain optimal physical, sensory, intellectual, psychological, and social functioning.
Types of Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation encompasses various approaches to address different aspects of a person’s well-being:
Medical Rehabilitation
This focuses on restoring physical function and reducing pain through medical interventions. It includes therapies aimed at improving mobility, strength, and coordination.
- Activities: Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, pain management, use of assistive devices (e.g., wheelchairs, prosthetics).
Vocational Rehabilitation
This aims to help individuals with disabilities prepare for, obtain, and maintain employment. It focuses on developing job-related skills and finding suitable work opportunities.
- Activities: Job training, career counselling, resume building, job placement services, workplace modifications.
Social Rehabilitation
This focuses on helping individuals reintegrate into their communities and participate in social activities. It addresses social barriers and promotes social inclusion.
- Activities: Group therapy, community integration programs, social skills training, support groups, advocacy for accessibility.
Psychological Rehabilitation
This addresses the mental and emotional well-being of individuals with disabilities. It helps them cope with the psychological impact of their condition and develop resilience.
- Activities: Counselling, psychotherapy, stress management techniques, support for mental health conditions like depression or anxiety.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan
Before the lesson, ensure you have prepared the charts and pictures illustrating disabilities and rehabilitation. You may also prepare simple scenarios for the dramatization activity. Begin by engaging students with questions about their general understanding of disability to gauge prior knowledge. Clearly explain each type of disability and rehabilitation, providing relatable examples. During the dramatization, circulate among groups to offer guidance and ensure they understand their assigned rehabilitation type. Allow students to copy the Board Summary notes after the main teaching points have been covered and reviewed in Step 7. Emphasize empathy and respect throughout the lesson. Check for understanding frequently through questions and discussions, providing additional explanations where necessary. Encourage all students to participate actively, especially during the group dramatization, to make the learning experience more interactive and memorable.
