The Alternative Bank (AltBank) has introduced free payment terminals and educational technology funding initiatives aimed at strengthening basic education across Northern Nigeria. The intervention is designed to support schools with modern financial solutions and learning resources that can improve educational outcomes for pupils and students.
The announcement was made during the maiden All Northern Schools Conference (ANSC) 2026, where the bank reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to quality education and equipping young learners with the skills needed for future success.
Speaking at the conference, the Executive Director for Commercial and Institutional Banking (Middle, South, and East) at The Alternative Bank, Garba Mohammed, emphasized the need for schools to embrace innovation and technology. Represented by Regional Business Executive for Commercial and Institutional Banking (North-West 1), Muhammad Danbichi, he noted that educational institutions must move beyond traditional teaching methods to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world.
According to him, Northern Nigeria continues to face significant educational challenges, including a high number of out-of-school children, poor learning outcomes, inadequate teacher development, and limited access to modern educational infrastructure. He stressed that technology-driven solutions can play a critical role in addressing these issues and improving learning experiences for students.
As part of its educational support strategy, AltBank unveiled three key areas of intervention. The first focuses on deploying innovative technology to improve reading and numeracy skills among learners in the early grades. The second aims to empower teachers with the tools and training required to deliver inclusive, engaging, and experiential learning suitable for the demands of the 21st century. The third pillar seeks to promote literacy and increase access to educational resources within communities.
The conference, convened by Dr. Hadiza Nuhu Yusuf Baba, President of Intercontinental Private Schools, Kano, in partnership with Team Masters Limited, brought together school administrators, educators, policymakers, traditional rulers, and development partners from all 19 Northern states. The event provided a platform for discussions on innovation, sustainability, and long-term impact in the education sector.
Former Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, delivered a keynote address at the conference, while senior officials from the Kano State Government, the Ministry of Education, and the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) also participated in the discussions.
AltBank stated that its involvement in the conference aligns with the education component of its HEART Strategy, a long-term development framework focused on Health, Education, Agriculture, Renewable Energy, and Technology. Through these initiatives, the bank hopes to contribute to stronger educational systems and improved learning opportunities for children across Northern Nigeria.
The three-day conference highlighted the growing importance of partnerships between financial institutions, educators, and policymakers in creating sustainable solutions for educational development and student success.
