The West African Examinations Council has reassured candidates who participated in the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (2026 CB-WASSCE) that the challenges experienced during the examination will not affect the release or accuracy of their results.

The assurance comes after some candidates in different states were forced to sit for their Mathematics and Agricultural Science examinations late into the evening following delays in the distribution of question papers and answer booklets.

WAEC had earlier attributed the disruptions to a combination of security concerns, logistical challenges, and the unfortunate death of some staff members in Gombe State, which affected examination operations across three states.

Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, the Head of the National Office of WAEC, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, assured students that the examination body has established procedures for handling such situations.

According to him, any technical or operational glitches experienced during the examination will not negatively impact candidates’ performance or final results because WAEC has systems in place to identify and correct any irregularities before results are released.

Dr. Dangut also reaffirmed the council’s commitment to releasing the 2026 CB-WASSCE results on August 3, 2026. However, he cautioned that candidates whose examination fees were sponsored by institutions or stakeholders with outstanding debts to WAEC could experience delays in accessing their results until the financial obligations are settled.

He appealed to all indebted stakeholders to clear their outstanding payments within the next 10 days to ensure that affected candidates are not disadvantaged.

The WAEC official further highlighted the council’s ongoing reforms aimed at improving the credibility of its examinations. He noted that the increased deployment of technology has significantly reduced examination malpractice despite opposition from individuals who previously benefited from dishonest practices.

According to him, WAEC now operates a cyber surveillance centre capable of monitoring examination activities in real time and detecting incidents of malpractice across examination centres. He added that the 2026 CB-WASSCE recorded a noticeable reduction in examination malpractice and that there was no leakage of question papers during the exercise.

Also speaking at the meeting, the General Secretary of NANS, Comrade Oladimeji Usman, commended WAEC for engaging with student representatives and encouraged the council to continue prioritising the welfare of candidates.

He acknowledged that while students had raised concerns over the late-night examinations during the exercise, WAEC provided explanations for the disruptions. He added that the student body has not received further reports of similar incidents since then and expressed optimism that improvements have been made.

The reassurance from WAEC is expected to ease the concerns of thousands of candidates awaiting the release of their 2026 CB-WASSCE results while reinforcing confidence in the integrity of the examination process.
