Note for teachers using this lesson plan

This lesson plan focuses on teaching Primary 4 pupils the importance and practical ways of showing respect and tolerance towards ethnic groups other than their own. Teachers should prepare by gathering relevant pictures or simple scenarios that depict inter-ethnic interactions. During the lesson, encourage pupils to actively participate in discussions and role-play activities, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all. Remind pupils that while we learn about general ways, specific examples from their own state and community (e.g., Abuja Municipal Area Council for FCT schools) should be used to make the concept concrete. By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to clearly state and demonstrate various ways to foster respect and tolerance among different ethnic groups in Nigeria.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

Nigerian Peoples II: Respect and Tolerance

Ways of Showing Respect and Tolerance for Other Ethnic Groups

Showing respect and tolerance for people from ethnic groups other than our own is very important for peace and unity in Nigeria. It means treating everyone fairly and kindly, even if they are different from us. Here are some ways to do this:

  1. Greeting others politely: Always greet people from other ethnic groups with kindness and respect. For example, saying “Good morning” or “Sannu” (Hausa), “Káàárò” (Yoruba), “Ndewo” (Igbo) shows you value them.
  2. Listening to others: Pay attention when people from other groups are speaking. Do not interrupt them or make fun of their accent or language.
  3. Learning about their culture: Show interest in their language, food, dressing, and customs. Ask questions respectfully to understand their way of life.
  4. Sharing and cooperating: Share your things and work together with everyone, regardless of their ethnic group, in school and in the community.
  5. Avoiding bad names or jokes: Never call people names or tell jokes that make fun of their ethnic group. This can hurt their feelings.
  6. Treating everyone equally: Do not discriminate against anyone because they are from a different ethnic group. Treat all your friends and neighbours fairly.
  7. Being patient and understanding: Sometimes people do things differently because of their culture. Be patient and try to understand their perspective instead of judging them quickly.
  8. Celebrating diversity: See the different cultures in Nigeria as a strength and something to be proud of. Attend cultural festivals or events with an open mind.
  9. Speaking up against unfair treatment: If you see someone being disrespected or treated badly because of their ethnic group, speak up and defend them politely.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan

Before the lesson, ensure you have an ethnographic map or pictures of various Nigerian ethnic groups. Prepare simple scenarios for discussions and role-playing that are relatable to Primary 4 pupils. Start by engaging pupils with questions about Nigeria’s diversity to activate their prior knowledge. Clearly explain the concepts of respect and tolerance, using simple language and practical examples. Encourage active participation in discussions and especially in the role-playing activity, which helps to make the learning concrete and memorable. Observe pupils during group activities to identify any misconceptions or difficulties. Ensure that pupils copy the Board Summary notes accurately into their notebooks.
