UNICEF has launched a significant training initiative in Cross River State, focusing on “Parental Engagement on Playful Learning.” The program aims to enhance learning experiences in schools across the state by integrating playful learning strategies.

The training, which kicked off at Government Secondary School, Igoli in Ogoja, involves 120 participants from five local governments in the Northern Senatorial District. Lead facilitator Dr. Asabe Ismaila highlighted the program’s goal to engage parents, teachers, and students in identifying dedicated times for play while learning.

Subsequent training sessions are scheduled for Yakurr LGA from September 16-19 and Biase LGA from September 23-26, 2024, with each session accommodating 40 participants. The curriculum introduced includes the “7 Cs” – communication, collaboration, commitment, coordination, curriculum, community engagement, and constant participation – essential for fostering children’s cognitive development.

Dr. Terkula Uyeh praised the initiative, noting its potential to improve children’s mental health and alertness. UNICEF’s collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has been crucial in promoting this pilot program.

UNICEF Desk Officer for the State Ministry of Education, Mr. Ukom Benjamin, and SUBEB Desk Officer, Mr. Patrick Udida, both expressed their appreciation for the training, emphasizing its importance in addressing declining educational standards and enhancing student outcomes.
