1. Selection of Broodstock

This is the initial and critical step where healthy, mature, and genetically superior male and female fish (broodstock) are carefully selected. Characteristics considered include:

  1. Health: Free from diseases, parasites, and physical deformities.
  2. Size and Age: Optimal size and age for reproduction, typically 1-2 years old for many species.
  3. Growth Rate: Fast-growing individuals are preferred to pass on desirable traits.
  4. Maturity: Females should have swollen, soft abdomens with a reddish vent, while males should release milt when gently pressed.

2. Hormonal Induction (Hormone Injection)

To ensure synchronous maturation and ovulation, broodstock are often injected with hormones. These hormones stimulate the final maturation of eggs in females and sperm in males. Common hormones used include:

  1. Pituitary gland extract (from other fish)
  2. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)
  3. Synthetic hormones (e.g., Ovaprim, Ovatide)

The injection is typically given intramuscularly or intraperitoneally, and the fish are then kept in conditioning tanks for a specific period (latency period) to allow the hormones to take effect.

3. Stripping/Milking

After the latency period, the mature eggs are gently extracted from the female (stripping) and milt (sperm) from the male (milking). This process requires careful handling to avoid injuring the fish.

  1. Stripping (Females): The female fish is held gently, and light pressure is applied to its abdomen, causing the eggs to flow out into a dry container.
  2. Milking (Males): Similar pressure is applied to the male’s abdomen to release the milt into a separate container or directly onto the eggs.

4. Fertilization

Once the eggs and milt are collected, they are mixed together to facilitate fertilization. This is often done in a dry container to prevent premature activation of the sperm by water.

  1. The collected eggs are placed in a clean, dry bowl.
  2. Milt from one or more males is added to the eggs.
  3. The mixture is gently stirred with a feather or plastic spoon for about 1-2 minutes to ensure thorough mixing.
  4. A small amount of water (activator solution) may be added to activate the sperm and initiate fertilization.

5. Incubation

After fertilization, the eggs are transferred to incubation facilities where they are kept under controlled conditions until they hatch. Incubation ensures optimal temperature, aeration, and protection from predators and diseases.

  1. Incubators: Various types of incubators are used, such as jars (e.g., Zoug jars), trays, or hatching nets.
  2. Water Quality: Clean, oxygenated water with stable temperature is continuously flowed through the incubators.
  3. Monitoring: Eggs are regularly monitored for fungal growth or unfertilized eggs, which are removed to prevent contamination.

6. Hatching and Larval Rearing

Once the eggs hatch, the newly emerged fish larvae (fry) are very delicate and require specialized care. This stage involves rearing them until they are large enough to be stocked in ponds or tanks.

  1. Hatching: The time to hatch depends on the fish species and water temperature, typically ranging from 24 hours to several days.
  2. Larval Rearing: Newly hatched fry are often kept in separate rearing tanks or hapas (net enclosures) with appropriate feeding (e.g., plankton, artemia, or commercial starter feeds) and water quality management.
  3. Transition: As they grow, they are gradually weaned onto larger feeds and eventually transferred to nursery ponds or grow-out systems.
