Types of Polishing Abrasives

Polishing abrasives are materials used to rub against a surface to achieve a smooth finish. They vary in hardness and grit size, from coarse to very fine. Common types include:

  1. Flint: A natural form of quartz, often used in sandpaper for general purpose sanding and light polishing.
  2. Garnet: A natural mineral abrasive, harder than flint, used for sanding wood and some metals, providing a finer finish than flint.

  5. Boron Carbide: An extremely hard synthetic abrasive, used for precision grinding and superfinishing of very hard materials, including tool steels and carbides.
  6. Aluminium Oxide: A common synthetic abrasive, versatile for various metals, available in different grit sizes.
  7. Silicon Carbide: Another synthetic abrasive, very hard and sharp, used for grinding and polishing hard, brittle materials.

Polishing Methods

Polishing can be performed using two primary methods:

  1. Hand Polishing:

    This method involves manually rubbing the abrasive material against the workpiece. It is suitable for small, intricate, or irregularly shaped parts, and for achieving a very fine finish or specific surface texture. It requires patience and skill.

    Procedure:

    1. Clean the workpiece thoroughly.
    2. Start with a coarser abrasive to remove major imperfections.
    3. Wrap the abrasive paper/cloth around a sanding block or use it directly.
    4. Rub the abrasive over the surface in a consistent, overlapping motion.
    5. Progress to successively finer grits until the desired finish is achieved.
    6. Use a polishing compound or paste with a soft cloth for the final shine.
  2. Machine Polishing:

    This method uses power-driven machines with rotating buffing wheels or belts coated with abrasives or polishing compounds. It is faster and more efficient for larger surfaces or production runs, providing a uniform finish.

    Procedure:

    1. Secure the workpiece if necessary, or hold it firmly against the rotating wheel/belt.
    2. Select the appropriate buffing wheel (e.g., sisal, cotton, felt) and polishing compound (e.g., cutting compound, colouring compound).
    3. Apply the compound to the rotating wheel.
    4. Carefully bring the workpiece into contact with the rotating wheel, applying steady pressure.
    5. Move the workpiece across the wheel to ensure even polishing.
    6. Change to finer compounds and softer wheels for subsequent stages to achieve the final luster.
    7. Always wear appropriate PPE (safety goggles, gloves) when machine polishing.
