Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils can recognise some common objects, identify some letters of the alphabet, and hold a pencil with some control.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

Matching Objects with Their Names and Writing Letters Ll-Pp

Part 1: Matching Objects with Their Names

Matching means putting things together that belong or go with each other. Today, we will match pictures of objects with their written names.

  • Object: Lemon (Picture of a lemon)
  • Name: lemon
  • Object: Lion (Picture of a lion)
  • Name: lion
  • Object: Mango (Picture of a mango)
  • Name: mango
  • Object: Mouse (Picture of a mouse)
  • Name: mouse
  • Object: Nest (Picture of a nest)
  • Name: nest
  • Object: Nose (Picture of a nose)
  • Name: nose
  • Object: Orange (Picture of an orange)
  • Name: orange
  • Object: Owl (Picture of an owl)
  • Name: owl
  • Object: Pen (Picture of a pen)
  • Name: pen
  • Object: Parrot (Picture of a parrot)
  • Name: parrot

We look at the picture, say its name, and then find the written word that says the same name.

Matching Rhyme

Tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”

Match the object, find its name,
Playing a fun learning game.
Lemon, lion, side by side,
Words and pictures, we will guide.
Match the object, find its name,
Learning letters is our aim!

Actions: Pupils point to objects, then to names, clap hands when they match, and pretend to write in the air.

How to use the rhyme: Sing the rhyme while pointing to various object-name pairs on the chart. Encourage pupils to repeat the words and actions.

Part 2: Writing Letters Ll-Pp

We will learn to write these letters and say their sounds:

Letter L l
  • Uppercase L: (Draw a straight line down, then a straight line across the bottom, from left to right.)
  • Lowercase l: (Draw a straight line down.)
  • Sound: /l/ as in “lemon”, “lion”
Letter M m
  • Uppercase M: (Draw a straight line down, slant down and right, slant up and right, straight line down.)
  • Lowercase m: (Draw a small line down, then curve up and over twice.)
  • Sound: /m/ as in “mango”, “mouse”
Letter N n
  • Uppercase N: (Draw a straight line down, slant down and right, straight line up.)
  • Lowercase n: (Draw a small line down, then curve up and over once.)
  • Sound: /n/ as in “nest”, “nose”
Letter O o
  • Uppercase O: (Draw a big circle.)
  • Lowercase o: (Draw a small circle.)
  • Sound: /o/ as in “orange”, “owl”
Letter P p
  • Uppercase P: (Draw a straight line down, then a curve from the top to the middle on the right side.)
  • Lowercase p: (Draw a straight line down from the middle, then a curve from the middle to the bottom on the right side.)
  • Sound: /p/ as in “pen”, “parrot”

Remember to hold your pencil correctly and form the letters carefully, starting from the top.

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Play-based Learning, Demonstration, Guided Practice, Songs and Rhymes, Picture Talk, Question and Answer, Repetition, Practical Activity.

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 3 minutes

Teaching Skill: Engagement/Recall

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils, sings a short “Hello” song, and asks them to recall some letters they learned last week (e.g., H, I, J, K) and some objects they can name.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to greetings, sing along, and name recalled letters and objects.

Learning Point: Pupils are engaged and recall previous knowledge.

Step 2: Introduction to Matching Objects and Names

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Explanation/Demonstration

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher displays a chart with pictures of objects (e.g., lemon, mango, pen) and separate flashcards with their names. The teacher explains what “matching” means by demonstrating how to match a picture of a lemon to the word “lemon”.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the teacher’s demonstration and listen to the explanation.

Learning Point: Pupils understand the concept of matching objects to their names.

Step 3: Guided Matching Practice

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Guided Practice/Observation

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher points to other pictures on the chart (e.g., lion, mouse, orange) and asks pupils to help match them to their names. The teacher guides them to pronounce the object names and then find the corresponding written word. The teacher leads the “Matching Rhyme”.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify objects, say their names, point to the matching written names, and sing the rhyme with actions.

Learning Point: Pupils practice matching objects with their names and pronouncing words correctly.

Step 4: Introduction to Letters Ll-Pp

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Presentation/Phonics

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher introduces letters Ll, Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp one by one using flashcards. For each letter, the teacher shows both uppercase and lowercase forms, says the letter name, pronounces its sound, and gives example words (e.g., “L for lemon, l-l-lemon”).

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils look at the letters, repeat the letter names, sounds, and example words after the teacher.

Learning Point: Pupils recognise letters Ll-Pp and associate them with their sounds and example words.

Step 5: Guided Letter Formation

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Guided Practice

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher demonstrates how to form each letter (Ll-Pp) on the board, explaining the strokes (e.g., “down, then across” for L). The teacher guides pupils to trace the letters in the air, then on their writing books, emphasizing correct pencil grip and starting points.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the teacher’s demonstration, trace letters in the air, and then practise writing letters Ll-Pp in their books with teacher guidance.

Learning Point: Pupils develop fine motor skills and learn correct letter formation for Ll-Pp.

Step 6: Reinforcement Activity

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Visual Learning/Repetition

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher plays the educational video on letter formation for Ll-Pp, encouraging pupils to watch and trace along with the video or repeat the sounds. The teacher walks around to provide individual support.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils watch the video, trace letters in the air or in their books, and repeat letter sounds.

Learning Point: Pupils reinforce letter recognition, sounds, and formation through visual and kinesthetic practice.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 4–5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher checks pupils’ understanding through short questions and practical tasks.

  1. “Point to the picture of the ‘parrot’ on the chart.”
  2. “Which word matches the picture of the ‘mango’?”
  3. “Show me the letter ‘M m’ on your flashcard.”
  4. “Write the letter ‘P p’ in your book.”
  5. “What sound does the letter ‘L’ make?”

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond orally and demonstrate the required skill where appropriate (pointing, matching, showing flashcards, writing, saying sounds).

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes

Teaching Skill: Recap/Homework

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher briefly recaps the lesson, praising pupils for their participation. The teacher assigns homework: drawing pictures of objects starting with L, M, N, O, P and writing their names, or simply practising writing the letters Ll-Pp in their books.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the recap and homework instructions.

Learning Point: Pupils consolidate their learning and know their homework task.

Lesson Keywords

  • Match – to put two things together that belong to each other.
  • Object – a thing you can see and touch.
  • Name – the word that tells us what something is called.
  • L l – the letter L, uppercase and lowercase.
  • M m – the letter M, uppercase and lowercase.
  • N n – the letter N, uppercase and lowercase.
  • O o – the letter O, uppercase and lowercase.
  • P p – the letter P, uppercase and lowercase.

Differentiation

  • Support: For pupils who find matching difficult, provide fewer options or use real objects they can physically hold and place next to their names. For writing, provide larger tracing letters or hand-over-hand guidance. Offer extra oral repetition of sounds and words.
  • Extension: For pupils who quickly grasp the concepts, encourage them to identify other objects that start with the letters Ll-Pp. Ask them to write simple words using these letters, or challenge them to match more complex object-name pairs.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Before the lesson, ensure all charts, flashcards, and real objects are prepared and easily accessible. Arrange the classroom to allow for clear visibility of the charts and for pupils to have space to write. Emphasize the connection between the object, its spoken name, and its written name. When teaching letter formation, pay close attention to each child’s pencil grip and stroke direction; correct habits early. Encourage all pupils to participate, especially during oral repetition and air tracing. For shy pupils, use a gentle approach, perhaps asking them to point rather than speak initially. The rhyme can be repeated several times throughout the lesson to reinforce learning in a fun way. Observe pupils’ ability to match and form letters to gauge their understanding.
