    Understanding democratic practices is crucial for responsible citizenship. This lesson lays the foundation for future learning about government and civic participation.


    Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

    The teacher will start by asking pupils what thay know about choosing leaders and making decisions as a group. A brief discussion will follow, leading into the topic of democracy.


    Lesson Content

    Democratic Practices

    Democratic Practices are the ways people participate in a democracy. A democracy is a government where people choose leaders and make decisions.

    What is Democracy?

    Democracy is a system where people have the power to choose leaders and make decisions. It’s based on the idea that everyone is equal and has the right to participate in government.

    Political Parties in Nigeria

    Political parties are organized groups of people with similar political aims and opinions, that seek to influence public policy by getting their candidates elected to public office. Examples are:

    1. All Progressives Congress (APC)
    2. People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
    3. Social Democratic Party (SDP)
    4. Labour Party (LP)
    5. All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP)
    6. Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)
    7. National concious Party (NCP)
    8. Accord Party
    9. African Democratic Congress (ADC)
    10. young Progressives Party (YPP)

    Roles of Political Parties

    Political parties play a crucial role in shaping political discourse, influencing policy-making, and fostering citizen engagement in the democratic process. They are:

    1. making laws
    2. Representing people’s opinions
    3. Creating policies
    4. organizing elections
    5. Monitoring government activities
    6. Promoting public participation
    7. Providing a platform for political participation
    8. Educating the public on vital issues
    9. Recruiting and training political leaders
    10. Holding the government accountable

    Teaching Methods

    To deliver this lesson,‌ ⁤the teacher will⁤ adopt⁤ the following methods: Discussion,Question and Answer,and Clarification.


    Instructional Procedures

    To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

    step 1: Introduction

    Time: 5 minutes
    Teaching Skill: Set Induction
    Teacher’s Activity: Ask pupils what they know about choosing leaders and making decisions as a group.
    Pupils’ Activity: Share their ideas and participate in a brief discussion.

    Step 2: Explanation of Key Concepts

    Time: 10 minutes
    Teaching Skill: Explanation
    Teacher’s Activity: Define democracy and explain its key features.
    Pupils’ Activity: Listen attentively and ask clarifying questions.

    Step 3: Examples of Political Parties and Their roles

    Time: 10 minutes
    Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
    Teacher’s Activity: Provide examples of political parties in Nigeria and explain their roles.
    Pupils’ Activity: Participate in a guided practice activity, listing political parties and their roles.

    Step 4: Self-reliant Practice

    Time: 5 minutes
    Teaching Skill: Independant Practice
    Teacher’s Activity: Assign a short activity where pupils list political parties and their roles.
    Pupils’ Activity: Complete the activity independently.

    Step 5: Note-Taking

    Time: 5 minutes
    Teaching skill: Note-Taking
    Teacher’s Activity: Guide pupils in taking notes on key concepts.
    Pupils’ Activity: Write down key terms and definitions.

    step 6: Evaluation/Review

    Time: 5 minutes
    Teaching Skill: Questioning
    Teacher’s Activity: Ask review questions to assess understanding.
    Pupils’ Activity: Answer the questions.

    Step 7: Conclusion

    Time: 5 minutes
    Teaching Skill: Summarizing
    Teacher’s Activity: Summarize the key points and assign homework.
    Pupils’ Activity: Listen to the summary and note the homework.
