Introduction

The Triumphant Entry is an important event in the life of Jesus Christ, marking His arrival in Jerusalem shortly before His crucifixion. It shows Jesus being welcomed as a king by a large crowd.

The Story of the Triumphant Entry

As Jesus and His disciples approached Jerusalem, near Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of His disciples ahead. He instructed them to go into the village and find a donkey colt tied there, which no one had ever ridden. They were to untie it and bring it to Him. If anyone questioned them, they were to say, “The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.”

The disciples found the colt as Jesus had told them. When they untied it, some people standing nearby asked what they were doing. The disciples replied as Jesus had instructed, and the people let them go. They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over it, and Jesus sat on it.

A very large crowd gathered, and many spread their cloaks on the road. Others cut branches from the trees, especially palm branches, and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed shouted:

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Significance of the Triumphant Entry

The Triumphant Entry holds several important meanings:

Fulfillment of Prophecy: It fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9, which stated that the King would come riding on a donkey, humble and victorious.
Declaration of Kingship: The crowds’ actions (spreading cloaks, waving palm branches, shouting “Hosanna”) were traditional ways to welcome a king. This was a public declaration of Jesus’ kingship.
Symbol of Humility: Jesus chose to ride on a donkey, a symbol of peace and humility, rather than a warhorse, signifying His kingdom was not of this world and His mission was peace.
Messianic Claim: The title “Son of David” was a messianic title, indicating the people recognized Him as the promised Messiah.
Beginning of Passion Week: This event marks the beginning of the Passion Week, leading up to His crucifixion and resurrection.
